Devon Calf Show

The Devon Club held its annual young breeders calf show at Exeter Market on Saturday 26 September. A very good quality entry came forward of 22 calves with 15 very enthusiastic young handlers.
 
Expertly judged by Philip Laity of the Carlyon herd from Cornwall, he gave excellent reasons and some good encouragement to the young handlers. 
 
The show was held at Exeter Market for the first time and provided excellent facilities for the exhibitors and a large ring for the showing allowed exhibitors to show off the calves to their best.
 
The show began with a very good class of young handlers with awards being given as 1st Alfred Seggons; 2nd Jessica Tapp; 3rd Shannon Ley; Several young handlers were making their debut in this class and should be well pleased with their efforts particularly Luke Andrews who stuck to his task enthusiastically.
 
The next class was again well supported with some very professional young showman being awarded 1st Alice Daymond; 2nd Rosie Bennett; 3rd Danelle Whybrow.
 
Senior showman was the closest class of the day 3 extremely capable young ladies who posed the judge some problems and all could have been placed first. 1st was Amy Westwood; 2nd Nicola Bishop; 3rd Emma Greenslade.
 
Amy Westwood went on to win overall handler champion, with Emma Greenslade reserve handler champion.
 
Mature showman was won by Kayleigh Daymond; 2nd Vicky Thomas; 3rd David Lawrence.
 
A refreshment break was welcomed, with everybody taking advantage of the delicious barbeque provided by Mrs Lawrence and helpers.
 
The calf classes commenced with class 5 a strong young calf class was won by the outstanding calf Thuborough Daisy 482 bred by Messrs Ley with Shannon Ley as the handler; 2nd Hoops Flower 441; 3rd Hoops Ivory 842.
 
Another strong class 6 followed on with Goldenpromise Golden coming out on top, followed by 2nd Lilylane Wildman Kitty 31; 3rd     Hoops Ivory 839.
 
Class 7 saw a close competition between 2 high quality Picston Shottle daughters. The winner which went on to be reserve champion was Daystar Shottle Ramira; 2nd Thuborough Champion Fontaine; 3rd Curscombe Jasper Swift 32.
 
Class 8 also included 2 Picston Shottle calves at the head of proceedings with 1st Payhembury Shottle Renate; 2nd Chettiscombe Shottle Dutchy 122; 3rd Davlea Allen Raven
 
Class 9 and 10 saw limited entries to 1st Easthill Thelma in class 9 and Curscombe Gideon Beechnut 34 1st in class 10.
 
In the championship, judge Philip Laity awarded the Devon YMA Cup to Thuborough Daisy 482 led by first time handler Shannon Ley.
 
This March born calf excelled in its length, dairyness, bone quality and overall balance and was a worthy Champion over the very exciting Shottle daughter, Daystar Shottle Ramira which is a quality calf with exceptional style awarded Reserve Champion.
