West Midlands Club March newsletter

RESUME OF YOUR NEW CHAIRMAN

I have been involved in the dairy industry for 20+ years; I work for National Milk Records as Sales Manager in south England & Wales. I also stand as Council Member for Gloucestershire at the Three Counties Agricultural Society.

I have held posts in young farmers for Worcestershire County, after being in Upton-Upon-Severn Club, in the past I was a member of West Midland Club as young breeder’s coordinator.

It is an honour to serve as chairman to the club taking over from Paul Westaway, who has done a fantastic job with some great meetings which have been very well attended.

I would like to carry on with getting some good speakers & visits to enterprising inspiring farm visits, also to encourage new members to join our club.

Thank You

Maurice Hart (PICTURED BELOW)

Winter Club Meeting.

The club enjoyed a super winter meeting when Tom King from Vortex Holsteins and his brother Chris, an independent nutritionist spoke at the Frome Bridge Mill. Tom and his family farm near Martinstown in Dorset and won the RABDF/NMR Gold Cup in 2011. Tom outlined how the business has grown from 90 cows to over 350 today and outlined the challenges and upsides of this sort of expansion. Chris outlined how he feeds the Vortex herd and gave the club a comprehensive look at feeding cows both here and in the USA.

Over 35 members enjoyed the meeting and we would like to extend our thanks to Tom and Chris for giving up there time to speak to the Club.

AGM

Following our club AGM in February, the club were delighted to have Steve Edmunds to speak to the club. Steve and his family milk 300 Holsteins near Bridgewater in Somerset and Steve is a board member of Mole Valley Farmers and is responsible for Mole Valley Renewables a business that is aimed at farmer members of MVF to understand and hopefully use the opportunities renewable energy can offer farmers. Steve’s talk was excellent and was well received by over 45 members, in fact we are now planning a club trip to Steve’s farm to see the various forms of renewable energy he is testing!

We are hoping this visit will be arranged for April/May – further details to follow...

The club would like to thank Steve for giving up his time and for a wonderful talk.
