At the inaugural Exeter All Breeds calf show, it was the Holsteins that shone through, with Champion Calf and Handler coming from the black and whites. Devon’s club qualifier was held at this event, and it was the Westwood sisters from Minehead that went home with armfuls of rosettes, claiming Champion and Reserve with their Alexander full sisters, and also doing the double in the Showmanship classes.
 
New to 2012 was the introduction of a Novice All Breeds Showmanship class, for handlers under 7 years old, with Anna Mortimore winning the class, closely followed by Keira Martin, Julia Grigg, and Ollie Pitkin. The Junior Showmanship class was won by Joshua Whybrow, a first time qualifier, fighting off the biggest showmanship class of the day. In the Intermediate class, the boys took another victory, with Mr Cool and Collected Alfie Seggons winning the class, with Jess Tapp closely at his heels, and last year’s Junior winner Paige Marsdon in 3rd.

 
Calf classes started with a 1,2 for Guy Ley, with Hoops Flower 474, sired by Aintree Nabraska, the sire of many of his previous show calves, getting the red rosette. The december class was the class to watch, with the Westwoods full Alexander sisters from Stonedon Fools Gold Red leading the class, followed by another Nabraska daughter from Guy Ley. A strong October class took judge Owain Harries a long time to split his top two, but it was the Westwood’s Panda Jordan Gem that came out on top, just pipping the deep ribbed Chettiscombe Outbound Rosina from the Tapps to the top spot. A very close class all the way down the line, but it was the locomation and rear leg set of the winner that gave her the edge. Emma Greenslade was victorious in the August class, with her own Golden Blaze Matson Ivy. The two mature classes were won by full sisters from the Tapps, Goldwyns from Huntlodge Allen Rosina, the same flush that produced last year’s Devon champion calf.
 
The style, openness and dairy strength of the Alexander sisters just couldn’t be beaten in the championship, giving the Westwood sisters Champion and Reserve in the same class, qualifying both calves for National. Panda Alexa Fools Gold also went on to win the Interbreed Calf title, as well as proud owner Molly Westwood winning the Interbreed Showmanship Trophy.
