Holstein south & Wiltshire Summer Herd Competition took place on July 16^th and 17^th with Terry Cox (Holmead) as judge, stepping in at the last minute for Dave Norman who injured his back a few days before the competition was due to take place. We wish Dave a speedy recovery.

The presentation evening took place at Longmoor Farm by kind invitation of the Rogers’ family. After a brief introduction by Colin Rogers members were able to inspect the impressive herd and the new parlour which was installed prior to the move from Oxford in March 2011. The prefix was changed from Cherwell to Longmoor and comprises 240 pedigree cows (160 cows came from Oxford) and 180 youngstock. Calving is all the year round with bull calves and beef calves being sold to Waitrose as is the milk. Picston Shottle is widely used in the herd with an Aberdeen Angus stock bull and British Blue on repeat breeders. Surplus fresh calved heifers are sold at Sedgemoor Pedigree Sales.

The future aim of Colin and Stuart is to improve the all round quality of the herd.

After looking round the farm members gathered at a beautiful old stone barn where Terry remarked on the very high standard of entries and that it was one of the best competitions he had ever judged. Nine herds participated with Longmoor being declared the Champion Herd very appropriately!

A buffet supper was provided by Caroline Huins and Anthea Daw in aid of the HYB Rally which HS&W are hosting in 2015. A raffle was also held.
