Derbyshire's 2016 Herd Competition

In July, we welcomed Matthew Isles from the Sunnybanks herd in Lancashire to judge our summer herd competition. He could not be at our Annual Dinner and Presentation of awards evening due to his impending wedding, but sent a note thanking the Kent family of Yeaveley for their hospitality and company. He also commented that he had “seen exceptional herds of cows. Every single entrant should be very proud of their herds. The standard throughout was fantastic and judging was not an easy job at all. It was refreshing to see such great standards and well-kept farms, given the tough two years we have all been faced with.”

Once again, the Shepherd family, from the Meldamar herd, were very successful in the competitions. First time entrant, D J Metcalf & Co won the small herds category on inspection and production with the Leascarr herd
Later in the month, we welcomed Holstein UK President David Tomlinson and his wife, Sheila, to Derbyshire. David’s job was to judge our young stock competition. His winner was Easom & Sons of Oakerthorpe, where he saw in-calf heifers that “were very uniform throughout, well grown and developed with very good dairy characteristics and strength.”

He also noted that if there been an individual animal award, it would have gone to W Bunting & Co with Alsopledale Lavenguard Lassie – an outstanding heifer just springing to calve, well grown, very dairy, super top line, legs & feet and an excellent mammary. Committee members and partners always enjoy the “Dinner with the President” evening, which seems to have become an annual fixture and moves around various eating houses of some repute.

In August, the annual calf show took place on the first evening of Bakewell Show. We thank the show committee and Bagshaws auctioneers for allowing us to hold this popular event, organised for the first time by Jess Mills, our new HYB Co-ordinator.

The Derbyshire Club provide a pagoda style marquee at the Ashover Show which is a focal point for member’s families and interested onlookers alike. So on to the Annual Dinner and presentation of awards which, this year, moves to the Bentley Brook Inn, Nr Ashbourne in late October.
