South Wales January 2017 News

Following on from the annual service the, president, Tom Phillips, and family topped the £470 collected at the chapel up to £1,500 which was presented to Glangwili Hospital, Carmarthen in recognition of the care and devotion shown to Susan Phillips during her illness. The contribution will be shared between the stroke and radiography units.

The January show and sale reflected an improving milk price with several lots of cows and heifers within the £1,800 to £2,100 range. Purchasers were led primarily by producers replacing stock lost due to TB about which a consultation process has recently closed. Individual members and the Club responded feeling strongly that the far reaching proposals would affect every cattle farmer due to increased testing with six monthly routine testing in a large portion of the country, automatic removal of inconclusive reactors with removal of wildlife limited to long term problem units.

Held at Newcastle Emlyn, the annual dinner saw 110 guests enjoy a superb meal whilst entertaining sponsors with Holstein UK President David Tomlinson, proposing the toast to the Club. Speaking on behalf of the guests was legendary TV presenter and former owner of the Ceunant Friesian herd, Dai Jones, Llanilar. His humorous presentation reflected a most interesting time off the farm presenting television and radio programmes including his most important role of lead presenter during live programmes from the Royal Welsh Show and Welsh Winter Fair.

Presently members are preparing for a new competition within the winter programme being an inter-county talent competition based on the traditional Welsh Eisteddfod. An organiser has been appointed in each area that will have the responsibility to seek out singers, dancers or entertainers of any other talent. The evening will open with a meal of cawl – the simple broth consumed on farms during winter months – whilst a betting system on the judges’ results will contribute towards Club funds.
