Shropshire Holstein Club News February 2017

We continued our winter programme of events with a visit by Colin and Yvonne Dent from Bridgend Holsteins in Cumbria.

Colin gave a fascinating history of Bridgend Holsteins up to the present which sees them milking 900 Holsteins featuring progeny from elite cow families from around the world. This is a high type and production herd and now focusing on health and fitness traits.

January 27th was the date for our annual dinner and awards evening held at Tern Hill Hall. Among our guests we welcomed HUK President Mr David Tomlinson and his wife Sheila.

Our guests also included Wyn and Mary Jones from Feithy Holsteins who presented our trophies after having been our 2016 herds competition judge. Mrs Marion Challinor joined us and presented the President’s trophy to Jane Arrell who Bryan Challenor had nominated.

This year saw the Hawksmoor herd of Robert and Hilda Clare win the Champion Herd for the sixth consecutive time which is an amazing achievement. Congratulations to all winners and very well done to all competitors for giving Wyn such a difficult task over the three days he was with us.

Philip Jackson was our February meeting speaker at which he recounted the sights and sounds of his study tour to the States in 2015 looking at management, feeding, housing and ventilation issues and ideas based on large herds. The general target seems to be get the cow comfort and environment sorted and then focus on staff training to achieve the goals needed to manage large and small herds alike.

Finally we are delighted that Andrew Patterson has won the HUK President's Medal. We are all very proud of him and wish him every success in his career.
