This year the Staffordshire Show staged an exciting new competition in the form of a VIRTUAL  COMPETITION in which 36 animals were entered from 8 herds.  This competition was sponsored by Bill Dennie of the well respected GB BULLS cattle breeding company.  By staging this competition in this way it became possible for breeders to compete with each other who, for whatever reason, were not able to bring their animals to the show.  This could, for example, be owing to time constraints or for a variety of health restrictions existing in their areas.  Bill Dennie had previously visited the farms involved and filmed all the animals in their own environment, without the need for halter training; this in itself offering a considerable saving of time.  Each of the 36 animals were paraded and filmed individually by Bill Dennie and the films were shown to Mr. Philip Kirkham, the appointed judge for this event, who placed all the animals in each of the four classes.  After the normal judging was completed in the show-ring, Bill set up a large television screen in the ring so that all the interested spectators could see and appreciate exactly what the judge had been able to observe in order to form his decisions.  The whole event was well received by many at the show and it is to be hoped that it can become a feature of future shows.  Bill Dennie is already planning improvements for next years show; for example, it is hoped to be able to have a larger screen with more audible sound commentary.  This was a brave new venture and is by no means intended to replace the showing of animals in the accepted manner but will clearly be approved by many exhibitors by removing the neccesity to isolate and re-test their animals following a visit to the show-ground.
