Devon

33 of us made our way to Melton Mowbray for 3 nights on 13th-16th June in the Harboro Hotel, which we would recommend for group bookings.

On our way up the motorway we stopped at our first herd visit to the Tiptoe herd owned by the Hill family.  A very interesting busy farm and great to hear about their recent expansion and plans for the future.

Wednesday morning we went to Anne Harrison (who we owe a great deal of thanks with helping with our planning of the trip). Ably assisted by Rachael, we were shown many good families who were all very tidy uddered and milky cows.

In the afternoon we travelled north through the Lincolnshire countryside, with level land so different from our Devonshire rolling hills and high hedges.  We visited the Corringham herd.  The Winter family showed us a fine herd of cows.  The Shottle M Inksou was an outstanding cow, and it was easy to see why this herd has done so well in the Premier Herd competition over the years.

On the Thursday we went to the Open Day of the Whinchat herd with the Birkle family.  They were worthy winners of the Holstein UK Premier Pedigree herd and put on a great day.  The Savoire fare and Farrah families were outstanding.

We invited all the hosts to a meal at the Hotel and were pleased that most were able to attend, we had a very enjoyable evening.

On the way home we called into Andrew Stafford and Janet at Saxelby Pastures.  They showed us the whole herd individually even though they were indoors, a good milky, profitable herds.  It was a pleasure to visit so many good herds and enthusiastic families, and our thanks must go to everyone for welcoming us on to their farms.
