The club enjoyed an impressive trip to Daylesford Organic near Moreton in Marsh, Glos which is owned by the Bamford family (JCB) and is a mixed organic farm. It’s an impressive unit with a Pedigree British Friesian herd on a forage based dairy system. All milk produced is processed on farm and made into cheese, which is sold in their onsite farm shop. There are approx. 100 pedigree Aberdeen Angus, 1200 Lleyn ewes lambing early April, 6000 plus laying hens, large horticultural enterprise, arable crops grown for whole crop and cereals and an onsite farm shop and café.
In May there was a day trip to the new dairy unit at Cogent’s Lea Manor Farm, which is part of the Grosvenor Farms Estate based at Aldford, Cheshire. Members were given a talk and interesting tour around the new buildings and heifer unit and came away with lots of ideas.
We enjoyed a stock judging and social evening in late May kindly hosted by Ian & Karen Showell with their Moordown herd at Nuneaton. Master Judges were Peter Marshall (Overseal) and Andrew Spicer (HUK, Saxelby) and we were also joined by young breeders from the East Midland Club.
Richard Thomas of Churchvale Holsteins acted as our Herd Competition judge in June and we also held our annual Calf Show at Canwell Show in August which was well supported and judged by Andrew Cope (Huddlesford).
