Northern Dairy Expo- Show Report

The 31st Northern Dairy Expo was held last Thursday 26th September and it proved to be a great success for all concerned. There was an excellent turn out of dairy animals for all to see and the sponsors of the show were out in force to present prizes and mingle with the farmers watching the show. The judge Iwan Morgan, “Erie Holsteins” travelled from Carmarthenshire and said the show of cattle were tremendous and the journey well worthwhile. The new Holstein UK president Mr Jimmy Wilson also made the journey north with Iwan and together they admired a most fantastic line up of some of the country’s finest Holstein animals.

The judging started with the junior animals and forward were some fantastic young calves all easily capable of winning at any show and many to watch for the future. A tremendous line up came into the ring for the junior championship with the judge finally tapping out Holmland Gold Chip Alanya exhibited by Anthony Jackson and Philip Hallhead as the Overall Junior Champion. Reserve Champion went to Drointon Tabwyn Holly exhibited by Grayridge and Blythbridge Holsteins. Exhibitor bred Junior Champion was Aliann Damion Miss Lolli shown by A Holgate and reserve went to PD and BS Lawrence’s Lynholme Goldfish Queenie.

The Intermediate heifer classes started with a fantastic line up of some very strong stylish animals. The judge had a wonderful line up to choose from and eventually decided on the winner which was won by A and JE Smith with Carkin Golden Squaw this animal also went on to win the Intermediate Exhibitor bred class as well as overall Reserve Exhibitor bred animal on the night.

Reserve Intermediate champion was won by local exhibitors H,M and D Hodgson and S and A Morley with Feizor Knowledge S Melody 3 which also won the Genetic Merit Award. Reserve exhibitor bred went to another Cumbrian family DI and AA Cannon with Espland Goldwyn Alison 2.

The pinnacle of the evening began with the start of the senior cow classes and what a superb entry in all classes of some examples of the best cows in the country. The judge took his time but without any hesitation chose his winners. All the class winners were then brought back into the ring to decide the Overall Grand Champion the grand finale of this tremendous night. The judge took his time and added to the tension but finally tapped out Saxelby Goldwyn Rose as Overall Grand Champion, exhibited by our Chairman Mr R Butterfield and wife Elaine this animal was a very worthy winner. Saxelby Goldwyn Rose had been chosen as the Senior Champion minutes earlier and also won “Best udder in show”, so well done to this cow and owners. Reserve Champion went to Mr Brian Yates with Kellywell Marshall Brooke which also won the Reserve Senior cow class and Mr Yates was awarded the Premier Exhibitor award. The Overall Honourable mention and Best Exhibitor bred animal went to another local farming family KJ and CS Wilson with Warnelview Finalcut Nita.

Other awards presented on the night were won by F and J Phillipson for Best New Exhibitor with their “Furness” herd and Premier Breeder award went to regulars of the show A and D Mackellar who travel each year to exhibit from Staffordshire with the wellknown “Drointon” herd.

Many thanks to all helped to make this evening go so well and to all the sponsors, exhibitors and committee for helping put on a most wonderful September Spectacular.
