The 65th Edition of the Western Holstein Club’s Annual Show and Sale of Bulls attracted an entry of just 33 bulls for this year’s event, of which 30 were forward on the day. Judge this year was James Pickford of the noted Stone based Picston herd who chose Bilsrow Onside from the herd of D J & S Tomlinson of Bilsborrow, Preston for his champion. This is a son Uecker Supersire Josuper bred from seven generations VG/EX dams from the Tomlinson’s well known Olympia family whilst in reserve was Woodmarsh Zanza, from the well-known herd of M & J C Gould Ltd of Bomere Heath, Shrewsbury. He is a son of Ladys-Manor Durbin and out of an EX92 Gerard daughter who is eighth generation scored in the top two grades from the Zandra family.

The Wexham Cup winner was Shanael Edward from the Miller family of Shanael Farms Ltd., of Evesham, Worcestershire. The Wexham Cup is awarded to the bull that gains the most points, not only for his inspection, but also for a combination of his ETA for weight of fat and protein, his sire’s Type Merit (TM) and dam and grand dam’s classification. Shanael Edward won with a score of 931 points. He is a son Seagull-Bay Silver from seven generations of VG/EX members of the UFM-Dubs Eroy family and has three VG sisters so far. The Gould’s claimed the Wexham Cup Reserve with their Woodmarsh Linsey, who is also a son of Seagull Bay Silver and bred from the Lyme family. He scored 885 points.

Trade for the older bulls was very lacklustre, not helped by the fact that they were not the best of shows but as soon as the sixteen month and younger bulls came into the ring, the bids started flying in and a really good clearance was effected. And it was the two top Wexham Cup bulls that led the trade; the winner, Shanael Edward selling for 4,200 gns to M N Davies of Clunderwen, Pembrokeshire and the Reserve, Woodmarsh Linsey selling for 3,050 gns to the Cox Farming Company of Marston, Stafford.

Next in the pricelist was another from the Gould stable; Woodmarsh Merganzer, a son of Mr. Moviestar Mardigras with a superb pedigree having 13 generations of VG/EX dams behind him from the Hanoverhill Meggie family, sold for 2,700 gns to A & D J Gregory of Litton, Buxton. Two bulls from Richard Pilkington’s noted Aintree herd were next in line; Aintree Newlyn, a son of Springhill-Oh Iron J Pirate from the Nuggett line sold for 2,300 gns to the Allen Family Farm Ltd., of Hanmer, Whitchurch for 2,300 gns whilst the Ladys Manor Olympian son, Aintree Lenard sold for 2,100 gns to D & S C Sutton of Oakhanger, Crewe. Richard also sold the sale’s only pure British Friesian entry, Aintree Pembroke for 2,000 gns to B D & C Eynon of Llanboidy, Carmarthenshire.

Shanael Farms sold a full brother to the Wexham Cup winner, Shanael Everlasting for 2,050 gns to W Bradbury & Partners of Earl Sterndale, Buxton and the only other to break the £2k barrier was the lovely Champion bull from Bilsrow which sold for 2,000 gns to J G Jones of Lloc, Holywell.
