There was an electric atmosphere on Monday 12th September at Borderway for the Annual Autumn Bull sale with over 70 fantastic bulls catalogued from many of the top cow families represented. Buyers from across the UK & Ireland packed the ringside for what is now recognised as the UK largest sale of Holstein & British Friesian bulls, they saw trade top at 3,800gns with 14 selling for or above 3,000gns with an overall average of £2,437 for an 83% clearance.
The Champion bull was tapped out by Mr Ian Watson from the Majestic Holstein herd in N. Ireland going to Evening Sammy consigned by Evening Hill Farm, Thursby. He was a son of Larcrest Contrast from an Excellent dam with over 90 ton lifetime followed by five more Excellents or Very Goods. This young yearling bull sold for 2,600gns to Messrs Fearon, Aspatria.
The Reserve Champion went to the second prize bull in the junior class going to Warnelview Interval consigned by Kevin & Christine Wilson, Wood Farm Thursby. He was sired by Iota and bred from an EX92 dam from the Irene cow family. Interval sold for 2,700gns to M & L Howat from Ayrshire. The Warnelview herd sold eight bulls in total topping at 3,600gns for Warnelview Vito bought by J BaxterBridge of Weir. He was from the Violet cow family sired by Iota.
The British Friesian breeders had a top quality group of bulls on offer and it was one of these that topped the trade at 3,800gns. Raby Jason was consigned by Sam Howarth from Pickering North Yorkshire. He was tapped out as the British Friesian Champion and bred from the Jamine cow family that was very successful at Raby. Jason’s sister recently won the Grand Champion at the Dairy Event this year and is now EX94. Jason was purchased by J Drummond Townend Farm, Kilmarnock.
Other British Friesian bulls that featured in the top price list was Nerewater Launch consigned by R W & J Bell. He sold for 3,600gns to A Hunter, Kilmarnock and was sired by Nerewater Launcher bred from three EX dams from the Torchie cow family.
The Reserve Champion bull was consigned by Adam Lawson from Fifie. Adams Cannon was a son of Marshside Rocket from the Clementine cow family renowned for their longevity and high butterfat and protein. Cannon was bought by A C White & Co East Titwood Farm, Glasgow.
Chapelhouse Glow consigned by K Brough & Son Chapel House Farm sold for 3,600gns to J Pollock & Sons, Bonnyhill Farm, Stirlingshire. He was sired by Sudan and bred from the Gloriette cow family.
The Armour family from Moffitt sold ten bulls topping at 3,500gns for Annandale Leinster who now joins the herd of A D & A Richardson Ltd Low Bank End Farm, Appleby. He was sired by Reece from the Lou Etta cow family.
