Auctioneers: WRIGHT MARSHALL

The September Mid Month Sale of Dairy Cattle including sections for the Western Holstein Club’s Focus Milk animals, attracted a large entry of over 450 head, in all age groups, of which 421 were forward on the day.

MILKING ANIMALS
The dairy building was full to capacity with an entry of 237 fresh calved cows and milking heifers presented for sale by our very supportive vendors. Quality was not up to the usual standard this month and this certainly reflected in the trade and the overall averages. The good strong heifers with plenty of condition saw little change in trade over the month but those that appeared more frail and lacking condition were substantially back on last month’s prices and much harder to clear.
T
op price was £1,900 paid for the best animal in the very last group of heifers consigned from Jack and Barclay Taylor of Myddle, Shrewsbury following the sale of their farm. This was for Burnbrae Missile Pintail, a daughter of BB Toy Missile sold giving 32kg. She sold to C & S Fitton & Son of Middlewich. Two heifers made £1,880 each; and one was the homebred Dilandy Glauco Jackie from Andrew Shakeshaft of Ellesmere which sold to B & M Elkin & Son Ltd., of Hilderstone. Next at £1,850 was the very powerful Bassingthorpe Demps Desdemona from Anne Harrison of Grantham, Lincolnshire for their Dempsey daughter with six generations of VG/EX dams selling to a local Cheshire breeder. Next at £1,820 was another Dempsey daughter, this time from Andrew Shakeshaft which sold giving over 40 kg to the Elkin’s and there were two at £1,800 – a Garrett daughter from Dennis Benson at Tattenhall selling to Brian Parker, Haughton, Stafford and a daughter of De-Su Gavin selling to John Bayley, Nuneaton.

Cows were an up and down trade with the best of them selling well topping at £1,850 for a very well-bred daughter of Goldfarm from the Papoose family from Ray Brown and Partners of Holmes Chapel, who also sold a second daughter of the homebred Sensation Red at £1,700. A second calver from Andrew Shakeshaft by Wyman realised £1,750

IN-CALF HEIFERS
A really good entry of 84 in-calf and served heifers sold quite well for those nearest to calving but those lying of were harder to sell. The top seller was a Toc Farm Goldfish daughter from E V & B Boughey & Son of Tarporley which sold for £1,380 with others from the same home at £1,350 and £1,300.

MAIDEN HEIFERS
Another good entry of 94 maiden heifers of various ages continue trade at prices which appear to incredible value for money and are surely a commodity which would be a ‘dead cert’ for profit when they calve down and surely better value than beef stores? Maiden heifers sold up to £670 and those born from March to May were up to £340.

HEIFER CALVES
Just two forward and both made £190
