Special Cow Tops October Sale
The October Border & Lakeland sale had an exceptional consignment of cows and heifers of offer from many of the leading herds in the North of England and Scotland. In total 137 head sold topping at 2,200gns with an overall average of £1,434 for a 100% clearance. There was a super group of freshly calved cows at the start of the sale many giving over 50kgs and a large percentage of the heifers sold giving over 35kg, with special mammary. Comparing the trade over the past few weeks, like for like the cattle in this sale were value for money with many buyers buying on a budget and not appreciating the outstanding quality.
The show was sponsored by Zoetis and Cogent and judged expertly by Mr James Taylor from the High Winnow herd near Wigton. His Overall Champion went to Snow Joan 16 consigned by Geoff & Ian Wilson Lowfield Farm, Appleyby. She was sired by Val-Bisson Doorman and bred from a VG87 dam sired by Gen-I-Beq Shotgun. The incredibly long bodied heifer had a massive frame and super udder and topped the heifer trade selling for 2,000gns to the Judge.
The Reserve Champion went to the 2015 Premier winning herd, Wormanby Mogul Betty sired by Moutfield SSI DCY Mogul. This heifer lived up to what we now except of Mogul daughters having a world class udder and bred from a Shottle dam with over 120 ton lifetime. She sold for 1,720gns to W Moffat & Co Kirtlebank Farm, Gretna.
Rennick Thompson from Springfield Farm, Egremont sold 30 of the most recently calved cows and heifers from his high yielding Springfieldview herd and topped the sale with a close to perfect cow to average just over £1,500. The top price, Springfieldview Bossman Eve had recently classified VG88 only a few days fresh in her second and was giving 52kgs. She was purchased by Mr James Taylor from the High Whinnow herd near Wigton. Another milky second calved cow from this herd giving 53kgs sold for 1,900gns to Fauld Farm Ltd. Longtown.
One of the youngest heifers in the sale was Ernespie Moncio Snowdrift consigned by the McMiken family from Ernespie Farm, Castle Douglas. She was bred from the Snowdrift cow family developed by the Mossrigg herd of Jonathan Fisher. She calved at only 22 months old and sold for 1,950gns to Mr James Taylor High Whinnow near Wigton.
