The November edition of Wright Marshall’s Famous Mid Month Sale of Pedigree and Commercial Dairy cattle incorporating the Western Holstein Club’s Focus Milk section for Pedigree Holsteins witnessed another rise up in trade this week and it was substantial. This month an entry of just 246 head was received and a total of 243 were sold with just three maidens failing to find a new home.

MILKERS
There were 143 milkers forward for sale and all 143 were sold and what a trade was experienced for every type of animal on offer. A great ring of buyers, a super atmosphere and generally a good show of quality cattle on offer all made to make a great buzz around the ring. It was a bit like a return to the good old days, which in fact were not that long ago in reality, with bids literally cascading towards the rostrum. There were eleven animals that sold for £2000 or more and a further twenty two that sold between £1800 and £2000 which equates to almost 25% of the entry selling within these bands.

The top seller was an outstanding heifer from Howard Walmsley of Garstang with his homebred Fordswood Berka Spirte, a daughter of Shanael Planet Beraka sold giving 31 kg daily and purchased by Alan Davies of Welshpool. Next in the price list was another super heifer Leesemanor Million Betsy from LH Lomas & Son of Byley, Middlewich which also sold to Mr. Davies with another from the same home by Holbra Pancake selling at £2020. Another heifer to make £2150 was a really good homebred daughter of Lauthority from Andy Morris of Redditch which sold to JF Owen & Son of Wrexham.

Cow trade was blistering. The top selling cow was another from the Norfolk Herd Dispersal of Jimmy Read for a third calf daughter of Moorshard Democracy sold giving 44 kg. She sold to Messrs Owen, Wrexham. Another cow to break the 2k barrier was the second calf Styche Saturn Saucy Red, a (VG85-2yr) daughter of Holmland Saturn Red from Seaton Farms of Audlem which was sold giving 42 kg to the same buyer.

INCALF HEIFERS
In calf heifer continues to be buoyant especially for those which are due within four to eight weeks. All the top prices this month were for heifers consigned by David Ishmael of Orrell Nr. Wigan who put on a tremendous show of quality well bred cattle. His top seller at £1520 was daughter of Charlesdale Superstition and he also daughters of Hayden and Viceroy at £1420 and Isley at £1400. Also Messrs KR Britton & Son of Dereham Norfolk sold daughters of Starr and Goldfish at £1380 and £1300. Lying off heifers calving in the late winter months sold to £900 twice for entries from SN Bailey & Partners, Audlem and Ian Gethin of Caersws.

MAIDEN HEIFERS
A nice entry of 55 maiden heifers sold reasonably well but have not moved on in price like the milkers yet. They were topped at £800 for a yearling Mincio daughter which led a nice consignment from JW & SA Airey & Son of Carnforth whilst another good consignment from E Cole & Sons, Diss Norfolk sold at £720 for a yearling by Schillview Jeeves Geldon.
