AND DERI HEIFER TOPS BEESTON MONTH END SALE at £2250

The November Month End Sale, incorporating pedigree sections for the Western Holstein Club’s Focus Milk brand, attracted an entry of 161 head for its most recent sale on Friday, 25th November. There were 136 head forward on the day and a total clearance of Holsteins was effected.

Trade was great from start to finish and there was a wonderful choice of cattle on offer and in particular a superb line-up of quality, milky cows. Yet again there was a really good atmosphere about the ring and lairage with plenty of confidence for the immediate future of milk production in the UK from the large crowd of buyers present, no doubt boosted by the continuing rise and much needed improvement in the price of milk.

The top seller today was a wonderful heifer from DR Evans & Co., of Dryslwyn, Carmarthenshire for their Deri Bossman Joanne, a July ’14 daughter of Bassingthorpe Bossman out of a (EX90) dam who had calved three weeks and was giving 40 kg daily. She sold for £2250 to Alan Davies of Upper Sarnau. Powys. A further five heifers sold at £2000 each and included another from Deri also by Bossman selling to Wood Brothers at Middleton, Manchester; two from Jeremy Platt of Lachstone Holsteins, Northwich – one by ABS Twitter selling to Wood Brothers and another by Dorcy selling to TG & GO Morgan of Treuddyn, Mold. Ian Showell of Nuneaton had a big, strong good uddered daughter of Gillespy from his Orbit family selling at this money to an undisclosed Cheshire breeder and Barbara and Graham Bell of Ridley, Tarporley also sold a beautiful heifer with great breeding by Lotto from their good Pansy family which also sold to Messrs Morgan.

Messrs Morgan also purchased a Shottle heifer from an 11 generation VG/EX dam from the Savoire Fayre family from Andy Birkle of Wymeswold, Leicestershire and a lovely heifer by Hawksmoor Roman from Rob Clare of Hawksmoor Holsteins, Market Drayton. Also at £1900 there was another Bossman daughter from Messrs Evans, Deri which sold for £1900 as did a daughter of Lookout Pesce Hampton from Stephen Boow of Millom, Cumbria which went to Ben and Margaret Elkin of Hilderstone, Stone.

But it was the cows that set the tone for the sale and it has to be said that there was one of the best selections of cows ever presented by our vendors at this sale and they should be congratulated. Nearly all the top prices came from a fantastic consignment from Rob and Hilda Clare’s noted, prizewinning Hawksmoor Herd of Adderley, Nr. Market Drayton; these were led by a two fresh third calvers who both sold at £2150 each. The first was the VG85 Spirte dauighter, Hawksmoor Rosemary 223rd who was the fifth generation classified in the top two grades and the second was the (VG87-3yr) Asterix daughter Hawksmoor Dawn 7th. Both cows were purchased by JF Owen & Son of Overton-on-Dee, Wrexham. Another purchase for the Owen’s was the fourth calf Mr.Sam daughter Hawksmoor Jessica 33rd (EX90) at £1900. The superbly bred Hawksmoor May Alta 11th (VG85) with 7 straight Excellent dams sold a week fresh with her 3rd for £1950 to TG & GO Morgan of Mold and second calf Goldfish daughter from the same home sold at £1900.

There were numerous other super cows from other vendors and these were led by a wonderful second calver, Saxelby Jessic Beth (GP83-2yr)(VG87-MS) from the Stafford family of Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire which sold for £2050 to Messrs. Owen.

A small entry of in-calf heifers sold to £1280 whilst maidens topped at £670.
