The first Border and Lakeland show and sale in 2017 took place at Borderway, Carlisle in front of a large audience of buyers from across the UK and Ireland. There was an exceptional group of cows and heifers on offer many with world class pedigrees including the first milking animal to sell in Europe bred from 15 direct Excellent dams. Trade topped at 2,150gns twice to average £1703 for a 100% clearance with 12 animals breaking the £2000 hurdle.
The event was sponsored by Paragon Veterinary Group and Cogent and was judged by John Hodgson from the Holmeden herd near Carlisle. Winning an outstanding show was Espland DVD Ada consigned by Alan Cannon from Espland Hill, Appleby. Ada was sired by Pellerat DVD and was bred from a Shottle dam with over 10,000kgs as a two year old. The buyer was undisclosed.
The Reserve Champion was from the same home and from the same cow family and once again she was blessed with a world class udder. Espland Uno Ada was sired by Numero Uno and was purchased by R McColm High Boreland Farm, Stranraer. The best uddered heifer in the sale was Espland Aftershock Ann sired by MS Atlees Sht Aftershock and bred from a VG88 Gillette Jordan. She sold for 2,000gns to J&I Wilson, Carskerdo Farm, Fife. Espland Impression Alison sired by Monument Impression sold for 1,800gns to EH Fearon, Walton Hall, Cartmel.
The Kepculloch herd owned by Robert Steel Balfron, Glasgow topped the trade at 2,150gns with a beautiful heifer sired by De-Su History. She was bred from a VG Bosside Altraross and now joins the herd of J&J Barr Easter Bucklyvie Farm, Fife.
Also selling for 2,150gns was Ceeingred Debonair Scarlet Red consigned by Gary McCormick Brownfield, Dumfries. This powerful red heifer had a very classy pedigree, sired by Scientific Debonair Red and bred from an Excellent 93 Rampage Red and traced back to two of the all time great Red & Whites Continental Scarlet Red EX95 & Stookey Fagin Scarlet Red EX96. She was purchased by JJ Taylor High Whinnow, Wigton.
HM Hutchinson & Son Redgate, Kirby Stephen sold three heifers to average £2030 with two selling for 2,000gns. Bowberhill Dorcy Pretzel & Bowberhill Uno Melody both had exceptional pedigrees selling to undisclosed buyers.
The Wormanby herd sold five outstanding heifers all with impeccable pedigrees. One to mention was Wormanby Alexander T Linda sired by Golden-Oaks ST Alexander and bred from a sister to the All Britain nominated and one of the UK’s best show cows Wormanby Atwood Linda EX93. This super stylish heifer was bought by JD Hetherington & Sons Blue Dail Farm, Maryport.
The next sale at Borderway takes place on the 1st February and will feature 200 head of freshly calved cows and heifers, in-calf heifers and bulling heifers. The catalogue for this sale will be available on the website
