02-03-2017 - Real Deal Heifer Top’s At Borderway Spring Sale

The March Borderway Monthly Dairy Day had 182 dairy cattle on offer comprising of freshly calved cows & heifers, in-calf heifers and bulling heifers with many of the main dairy breeds represented including Holsteins, Brown Swiss, British Friesian, Montbeliarde, Fleckvieh and Ayrshires on offer.   
 
Trade topped at £1900 to average £1564 for the milking portion with 39 animals selling for or above £1600, sellers must again be congratulated on the quality of animals on offer with a big percentage of animals giving over 30kgs up to 65kg.  The sale attracted a huge crowd of buyers from the length and breadth of the UK with 43 buyers recorded from 14 counties.  It is worth reminding ourselves that trade is just over 50% up on the year compared to March 2016 when heifers averaged just over £1000.  
 
M& JA Johnston, Petteril Side Farm, Carlisle sold four outstanding heifers all sired by Nethervalley Real Deal and topped the day’s trading at £1900 with a strong framed heifer with a majestic mammary system.  These four classy Real Deal heifers averaged just over £1700 with a second selling for £1820.
 
Messrs Lindsay, Seaton Hall Farm, Millom who have been dispersing their herd as they calve, sold three very milky cattle topping at £1780 for a heifer sired by Bilsrow Oscar giving 36kgs.
 
Firm of Andrew Harvey, Drum Farm, Dumfries sold six cow and heifers to average £1718 with two selling for £1780.
 
First to sell for £1780 was an excellent uddered second calve cow giving 40kgs sired by Recancrest Beau.  The other was for a 37kg heifer bred from a superior line of cows with lactation to 13000kgs and 5% butterfat.  
 
SK Morton, Long Meg Farm, Penrith sold 17 tremendous cows and heifers all giving large volumes of milk.  This very milky group topped at £1720 for a Gillette Stanleycup cow fresh in her second giving 39kgs.  
 
Colin Robb from Dinwoodie Green Farm, Lockerbie sold the most recently calved cows and heifers from their well bred British Friesian herd in what will be their first sale to disperse the herd.  Trade topped at £1380 for a perfect uddered heifer sired by Winnoch Counsellor.  The Robb family must be congratulated on the group of bulling heifers and heifer calves they sold after the milkers.  These heifers were well grown and displayed huge potential topping at £1050 for a daughter of Deangate Tarquin.  This fine group of heifers averaged £842.
