02-06-2017 - Amazing Day for the Letterkenny herd

Once again the Border & Lakeland Holstein Club sale had an outstanding selection of freshly calved cows and heifers for the May edition of this very popular event.  Trade topped at 2,200gns to average almost £1600 with buyers recorded from 10 counties across the UK.  Although there were not many animals selling over the £2000 price bracket only a small amount sold below £1500. 

The event was sponsored by Paragon Veterinary Group and Cogent and judged by Robert McColm owner of the well known Soulseat Brown Swiss herd.  His overall champion went to Letterkenny Goldfish Judy 3 consigned by Alison Hunter.  Judy was fresh in her second lactation and was giving 50kgs, her dam was an Excellent 94 Talent daughter with over 100 ton lifetime followed by a further seven generation of cows classified in the top two grades.  This super stylish cow sold for 1,900gns to Robbie Scott owner of the Nethervalley herd in Ayrshire.

The Letterkeeny herd also won the Reserve Championship with their first prize heifer in milk and sold for the top price of the day at 2,200gns to Andrew Carter Gerrard House, Wigton.  Letterkenny Smokin Papoose 4 was sired by Misty Springs Smokin and will be the fourteenth generation of cows to classify Excellent or Very Good from the popular Papoose/Marq I cow family.

The prize winning Boclair herd owned by the Brewster family near Glasgow sold six amazing heifers to average almost £1750 all giving huge amounts of milk and all bred from impeccable pedigrees.  Selling for 2,100gns was Boclair Avalanche Delight sired by Silveridge Avalanche and bed from an Excellent 92 Shottle, Excellent 91 Talent and then the famous international bull dam Overside Convincer Delight EX93.  This very milk heifer giving 47kgs was purchased by Smallthwaite Farms, Penrith.

Evening Holsteins from Carlisle sold six heifers with world class udders to average almost £1800 and topped at 2,000gns for Evening Success Fogey sired by Evening Success.  Her third dam was an Excellent 95 Outside with over 60 ton with records testing over 5% butterfat.  This perfect uddered heifer was purchased by R Byers & Sons Canonbie.

Wormanby Holsteins sold a close to perfect cow in her second, Wormanby Brendal Anderson was sired by Regancrest B Brendal and bred from an Excellent 93 Spirte that ahs just recently calved in her seventh lactation.  This young cow has the potential to classify highly this lactation and was purchased by A&B Bargh Wood Close Farm, Skelton.
