A substantial crowd from 13 different counties and as far away as Cornwall, Pembrokeshire & North Humberside gathered at Mead Farm, Lacock on Monday this week for the dispersal of Messrs A.J & M.R.F Fox’s first class Abbeymead herd. There were 38 cattle buyers as well as plenty of folk for the machinery at the start of proceedings.

Abbeymead Dude Gladys VG89 was the centre of pre-sale talk, having achieved the maximum classification score as a second lactation animal. Her dam was a show cow and perhaps Kevin George, who secured her at 3,300 guineas will be tempted to put a halter on her as well. She sold 170 days in milk, giving 43kg and due again in November to Snowden

Jeff Jones from Magor in Gwent purchased the 2100 guinea Abbeymead Seagual Pamela VG852yr for his Larchwood herd and being the 11th generation of EX/VG cows and due  in September to Numero Uno, she looked good value.

Richard Jenkins from Kilgetty, Pembrokeshire purchased 10 good cows for his Dawesford herd, including the very smart Abbeymead Carson Babs 2 GP842yr, which is one of the first daughters of Mr Chassity Obs Carson to be registered in UK at 2000 guineas.

Served heifers were a strong trade with two making 2000gns, including Abbeymead Doorman Pamela, a daughter of Jeff Jones’ cow mentioned above, at 2,200gns.  Paul Gregory from nearby Corsham was the successful bidder for his Boxbrook herd.

The heifer calves at foot were a flying trade averaging out at almost £570 each. The top price went to the first calf in the ring which was Abbeymead Solomon Meg 2, selling for 1520gns to the Russell family who run the Churchstar herd in Brinkworth.  The Meg family was much in demand and the 18 catalogued went far and wide including a served heifer by Dude which will travel to Peter Waring’s Winton herd in North Humberside, where the Meg family has been quite a feature for many years.

Earlier in the day a 2004 MF4365 tractor with f/e loader made £14,900 and a RS Evolution 14 Diet Feeder (2011) fetched £4300.
