23-08-2017 - Great Sale to Disperse the Wyndford herd with 18,000 guinea peak

<<< Back to Sale Reports

A new highest price of 18,000 guineas for 2017 was established at the Wyndford dispersal for Messrs Wilfred Maddocks Ltd when they sold their entire herd on farm near Newport, Shropshire on Thursday this week. A tremendous crowd of 300+ gathered from all parts of the UK and from Eire and one from Holland to see the 411 head go through the ring and average an impressive £1730 per life.

There were 96 buyers including volume buyers who took 20- 30 head each and dozens of breeders seeking that one special animal. Wales was well represented and a strong contingent took 82 head back to the Principality. Ireland, both North and South shipped 45 head over the water and Cornish buyers secured 51 head to various farms.

Wyndford Sanchez Erle 10 EX93 was featured on the catalogue cover and had created huge interest before the sale. A truly outstanding example of the Holstein cow at its best, she sold for 18,000 guineas to Cees De Jong who made the trip over from Holland to secure the cow, in partnership with Ben Yates. They had to fend off determined competition from several bidders but will ship this great Erle cow back to Cees De Jong’s farm in Hoogblokland. The Erle family were a real feature of the day with EX94 dam of the Sanchez making 5100 guineas in her 5th lactation, her yearling daughter making 5800gns, another Sanchez daughter scored EX90 at 5100 and a 9 month old Doorman also selling for 5100 at the end of the sale.

At the 2011 Huddlesford dispersal sale David Maddocks purchased Huddlesford Mrs Melody EX93 for 32,000 guineas. She was a daughter of the superb Shanael Gelpro Melody EX95 who was Inter-Breed Champion at one of the last Royal shows to be held. The family has continued to flourish at Wyndford and the superb Atwood Mrs Melody 3 VG88 2yr made second top of the day at 13,000 guineas to Messrs R McNeil of Cairn Pat Holsteins from Stranraer. Her dam made 4000 gns and 9 month old Fontaine sister 3800gns.

There were many features on this magical day, not least the expert stockmanship of herd manager Ben Yates who ensured the cattle were in the best possible form for the day. The crew responsible for fitting the cattle and ensuring they came into the sale ring on time and looking great was under the expert management of Clippaholics, the highly professional team under James & Wendy Young of Yorkshire’s management.

The dairy herd being loose housed did not present any obvious problems on the day but the young stock, as yet not asked to live in any particular accommodation, were in great demand. The calves at foot were a flying trade peaking at 3800 guineas for a Fontaine daughter of the Stanley Mrs Melody at just 9 months of age. Served heifers were easy to sell at between 1500 and 2000+gns reaching 2000gns + on 14 occasions and selling to a top of 5000gns for Wyndford Lotus Rebecca 97, a December calving heifer to Wiltor Dreamer and Wyndford Goldwyn Appletime 24, served but not guaranteed in calf to Doorman (?) for next April also at 5000 gns. As the day drew to a close, enthusiasm remained buoyant as maiden heifers topped at 5100gns for superb Wyndford Doorman Erle 20 to round of a special day.
This has been a great privilege for us as auctioneers to sell such a fine herd and a delight to see enthusiasm for top quality cattle still in abundance. A big thank you to everyone involved in this memorable day.
