The Cally Mains Holstein Friesian herd owned by the Prentice family was dispersed at Borderway, Carlisle on Wednesday 23rd August in front of a huge crowd of buyers from across the UK.  The decision to sell this fabulous dairy herd was taken following the sale of their farm situated in one of the most beautiful areas in the south west of Scotland near the town of Gatehouse of Fleet.
Three generation of the Prentice family have been dairy farming at Cally Mains with the original genetics tracing back to Ayshire’s from the heart of Ayrshire.  Trade topped at 2,250gns resulting in a £1560 average for the milking herd with 58 animals selling for £1800 or more.  

The milking heifers averaged £1629 and it was a freshly calved heifer late on in the sale that topped the trade selling for 2,250gns.  She was sired by Pen-Col Drumbeat and had recently calved in July giving 26kgs.  She was purchased by J&J Clark Valley Field Farm, Kirkcudbright.

The highest yielding heifer and was sired by Coopon Showtime and bred from a Feikjes Blackstar dam with two lactations over 11000kgs.  She sold for 2,200gns to C. Dent Bridge End Farm, Kirkby Thore.

Dry and late lactation cows were the best trade of the day.  Selling for 2,100gns was a daughter of Coldsprings Gabe due in October with her second and purchased by J Gatherer Hill of Ochiltree, Cumnock.

Cows topped at 2,200gns for a freshly calved cow in her second sired by Ernespie Elite giving 45kgs.  She was bought by volume buyer J&M Prentice Blackwood Farm, Cumnock.  Another freshly calved second calver sired B Coopon Rooster sold for 2,100gns to JJ Taylor High Whinnow Farm, Wigton.

In-calf heifers averaged £1497 and topped at 1,900gns for a daughter of Ernespie Elite daughter due shortly to Ernspie Mister and was purchased by D. Dalgleish Balls Head Farm, Penrith.  Another September calving heifer sired by Kelstein Dynasty sold for 1,800gns JW Coulthard & Son Brisco Hill Longtown.

Bulling heifers and heifer calves sold extremely well averaging £830 and topping at £1000 for a daughter of Ernespie Elite bred from a Logan Ultimate dam with over 11000kgs.  This stylish heifer was bought by W&A Wilson Westerhill Farm, Glasgow.
