22-09-2017 - PICTURE PERFECT AS TORY TOPS TRADE

<<< Back to Sale Reports

There was a fantastic consignment of top quality heifers forward at Borderway, Carlisle for the September edition of the Border & Lakeland Show and Sale.   Trade topped at 3,000gns for the Overall Champion to average £1837 with 14 heifers selling for or more than £2000.

The less than favourable weather conditions over the past weeks has had a negative effect on trade with many milk producers concerned about the amount of crop still to harvest and a potential short fall in winter forage.  There were a number of heifers that looked value for money due to some buyers being less than enthusiastic, however the outlook does remain bright and there is a high level of confidence within the industry as milk prices continue to rise.

The event was sponsored by Paragon Veterinary Group and Cogent and expertly judged by Dan Bargh from the Woodclose herd near Skelton.  The overall Champion went to Lomand Atwood Tory consigned by the famous livestock photographer Jane Steel from Glasgow.  Atwood Tory was bred from the heart of the Wilsondale Tory cow family, her dam was sold in 2015 for 5,000gns in the same sale.  She topped the days trade at 3,000gns and now joins the herd of Jason Booth, N. Ireland.

The Reserve Champion went to the second place senior heifer, Espland Naomi was consigned by Alan Cannon Espland Farm, Appleby.  This powerful framed heifer was sired by Zelgadis and bred from two Very Good dams, she was second on the price list selling for 2,700gns to the Brewster family at Wester Borland Farm, Stirling.

The Dunnerdale herd owned by Stephen Boow sold four very classy heifers all with world class pedigrees to top at 2,700gns and average £2310.  Selling for 2,700gns was Dunnderdale Euphoric Sabrina 2 sired by Euphoric and bred from eight generations of Excellent or Very Good dams.  She was purchased by JJ Crosier Whinhill House, Clitheroe.

Dunnderdale Lineman Sabrina sold for 2,400gns to the Mawson family from Bailey Ground Farm, Seascale.  She had an ultra fancy udder and was potential seventh generation to classify in the top grades.  Her grand dam was an Excellent 92 Igniter with over 90 ton lifetime and the third dam was an Excellent 94 Prelude with over 110 ton lifetime.

The Warnelview herd owned by Kevin & Christine Wilson sold eleven highly productive heifers all with impeccable pedigrees and udders that all milk producers admire.  Topping this fine group was Warnelview Jordan Susette 4 bred from seven generations of Excellent or Very Goods, she sold for 2,150gns to W Brewster, Wester Borland Farm, Stirling.

The next dairy sale at Borderway takes place on Wednesday 4th October and features 200 animals in the Borderway Monthly Dairy Day sale.  A catalogue for this sale will be available on line at www.harrisonandhetherington.co.uk.   There are a number of groups of in-calf heifers, bulling heifers  and herds for sale currently on the H&H private sale register to find out more please contact and member of the dairy team.
