01-03-2018 - Despite The Sub Zero Temperatures Trade Was Steaming Hot At Market Drayton

<<< Back to Sale Reports

The weather conditions were certainly not favourable for our weekly Dairy sale, which impacted on numbers a little as distant vendors struggled with the weather condition and also resulted in us being unable to wash on welfare grounds.

However despite this, 36 cattle passed through the sale ring with all milking cows and heifers bar one In Calf Heifer, with another great show of milking cows and heifers and a great effort from all to turn them out to the best of their capabilities.

What a stunning trade with 9 animals cruising over the £2,000 bracket and a further 6 over £1,800! The ring was brimming with activity and there were again not many spare seats in the house, which certainly helped generate some much needed heat in the sale ring!

Demand continues for cows and heifers exhibiting width and power which have plenty of milk, with purchasers selecting animals that look capable of withstanding the rigours of modern dairying and also animals which will last for many lactations, furthermore there certainly appears to be a continued shortage of milking stock currently which is driving the current trade.

The trade was once again phenomenal from start to finish with the top price being £2,300 for the pedigree heifer Vaglefield Wycliffe Damson, calved just 2 weeks and yielding 33kg daily, she was consigned by regular vendor Malcolm Jones, who showed a super group of animals. This leading heifer was snapped up by Oakley Farming Ltd, Dorrington, who also secured several other outstanding animals throughout the sale including a great heifer from RG Swain; Shavington Goldfish Jaqueline calved just 10 days and yielding 30kg daily who was knocked down for £2,200.

Regular vendor Barry Evans consigned his usual quality and topped at £2,150 for a Welcome Armitage Pesky daughter which was very freshly calved and was also bought by Oakley Farming Ltd of Dorrington.

We sold a great run of heifers from PC & V Kenny of Swynnerton, with their consignment twice reaching £2,080. These were young heifers from the high yielding Sandiford herd, and already giving  over 32kg/day. The successful purchasers were again Oakley Farming of Dorrington.

OC Whittaker consigned a well balanced heifer sired by Laurelhill Classic, just calved 11 days she was already yielding 28kg and she was taken home by RA & AR William of Wrinehill, Crewe.

Cows were in high demand today with £2,150 being the top bid for a super cow from John Oakes of Tarporley, this lovely second calver was fresh calved and was secured by BG & MA Elkin & Sons of Hilderstone. They also took home with them a cow from M & J & E Hughes of Criggon at £2,120, a second lactation cow Dilandy Mincio Gema who had calved on the 15th February and was yielding 41kg daily.

Many other good milk cows sold for over the £1,800 threshold.

Overall average for every milking animal through the sale ring (including animals with faults) £1,672.40
