<<< Back to Sale Reports

The much anticipated Bowberhill Holstein dispersal sale took place at Borderway, Carlisle on Friday 16th March in front of one of the largest crowds the sale centre has seen for many a year.  This special herd was the current Border & Lakeland Champion Herd and will be one of the best to sell in the UK this year.  Trade topped at 7,200gns with the milking herd averaging £3597 with 39 animals selling for or more than £3000.

Owners Malcolm and Jean Hutchinson who farm just outside the town of Kirby Stephen in the upper Eden valley established the herd following FMD when they purchased the well known Comley herd and since then have developed it into one of the most admired and respected Holstein herds in the UK.  They had support from long life friend’s, neighbours and Holstein breeders from the length and breadth of the UK and Ireland with buyers recorded from 21 counties.

The influence of Coyne-Farm Dorcy throughout the herd was massive; through his daughters and through his son Mogul.  It was a Dorcy daughter that topped the trade at 7,200gns.  Bowberhill Dorcy Vanessa VG87 was an amazing young cow with a close to perfect udder.  She was bred from the popular Italian cow family tracing back to Aquila Cleitus Vanessa and was purchased by R. McNeil, Cairnpat Farm, Stranraer.

Mr McNeil purchased a number of special individuals including Bowberhill Mogul Gremlin VG88 3YR for 6,500gns.  She was sired by Mogul and bred from four direct Excellent dams the third dam being the famous show cow Upsall Skychief Gemlin EX93.  Her young Oconnors Classic heifer calf sold for 2,200gns to the Robinson family from Leyburn.

The last and youngest milking animal in the sale was Bowberhill McCutchen Barb 2. She has classified VG86 2yr only a few weeks calved and was a member of the famous Johns Lucky Barb cow family.  Her dam was an Excellent 93 Jeeves followed by an Excelelnt 94 Shottle and a 90 ton Excellent 94 Emerson.  This superstar sold for 7,000gns to Eryl Done North Field Farm, Berwick.

Bowberhill Lineman Gail was another star in this quality sale selling for 6,200gns to R. McNeil, Cairnpat Farm, Stranraer.  She was sired by Comestar Lineman from a pedigree with nine generations of Excellent or Very Goods cows tracing back to the famous Astronaut Gail cow first developed by the famous Startmore herd in Ontario Canada.   Mr McNeil also purchased Bowberhill Dorcy Lana 2 for 5,000gns.  She was sired by Dorcy from nine generations of Excellent or Very Good cows the first two dams both Excellent 92 by Shottle and Mr Sam.

One of the most sought after milking animals in the sale was Bowberhill Mogul Papoose.  She completed seventeen generations of Excellent or Very goods tracing back to the famous Sleepy-Hollow Papoose / Marq I cow family.  Papoose had one of the best udders in the sale and had calved back in December and had classified VG85 2yr.  She was purchased by Jason Booth from Dungannon, N. Ireland for 5,100gns.

An outstanding group of in-calf heifers topped at 4,200gns twice to average £2665.  Topping this section was a beautiful Mogul daughter from the Melody cow family again tracing back to Astronaut Gail.  She carried a service to Unix and was due in August.  Her dam was an Excellent 93 Shottle with over 80 ton lifetime followed by an Excellent 93 Blackstar with over 130 ton lifetime.  She was purchased by B O’Connor Bawnmore House, Co. Cork, Rep of Ireland.

Also selling for 4,200gns from the In-Calf heifer group was Bowberhill Logrey Doorsopen Mandy.  She was sired by Doorsopen and bred from a Very Good 87 Mogul who had sold earlier in the sale for 4,600gns to Eryl Done North Field Farm, Berwick.  The next nine generation were all Excellent classified cows.  Mandy was purchased by AL Dean Son Tofthose Farm, North Yorkshire.

The heifers calves looked amazing and all were sired by some of the very best sires in the business.  These stylish young calves topped at 2,700gns with 13 selling for or more than £2000 to average £1444.  Topping the calves at 2,700gns was Bowberhill Applicable Gremlin 2 sired by Stantons Applicable and bred from five direct Excellent dams she was purchased by Geoffery Patton from the Carrowcroft Holstein herd in Co. Down, N. Ireland.  Her VG86 2yr Iota dam sold for 4,400gns to the prize winning Simlahill Holstein herd owned by Nicholas McCann, Co. Down, N. Ireland.
