HOLSTEIN HEIFERS TO £2100, COWS TO £2020 & HOLSTEIN BULLS TO £2700 - TWICE

The April Month End Sale incorporating the Western Holstein Club’s Focus Milk Sale of Pedigree Holsteins attracted an entry of 160 HEAD of fresh calved cows and heifers as well as Holstein Bulls for the Western Holstein Club’s Spring Show and Sale and the entire dispersal of unregistered British Friesians from NichollsFarms, Nr. Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire.

MONTH END DAIRY CATTLE

There were 48 fresh calved cows and heifers forward for the Month End Dairy sale, with all 48 head selling on a buoyant trade particularly for the middle and lower range. Top price of the day went to wonderful uddered heifer from WHG Dimelow & Co of Malpas. This was for a Shot Trigger daughter who had freshened at the end of March; she was sold giving 38 kg and purchased by A & H Mayer, Stoke-on-Trent for £2100. Next top price was for a second calved cow from D & E Monk, Ormskirk; sold giving a daily yield of 42 kg and sired by a homebred sire by Mr Sam, selling for £2020 also purchased by Messrs Mayer. £2000 was paid for a very good Ayrshire cow from RWM & PM Barnett, Holmes Chapel; sire by Tri-Star Burdette who had freshened with her second three weeks ago and giving an outstanding yield of 51 kg, selling to PA & JM Astley, Powys. Another entry from the Barnett’s featured next, a fresh heifer by Jareb Cri and giving a daily yield of36 kg, selling for £1960 to Bowdler Farms Ltd.

HOLSTEIN BULLS

There was a small entry of just 10 bulls for the Western Holstein Club’s Spring Show and Sale which was ably judged by David Hastings Senior. For his Champion he selected Peter Waring’s Winton Tyranny, a November2016 born son of Paramount from 8 generations of Very Good or Excellent cows from the Trixie family andin Reserve was Richard Pilkington’s Aintree Primo, a son of Pesky Trix and 50% Friesian out of the well-known Pauline family bred at Blackisle. Top seller at £2700 was Woodmarsh Mailer from M & JC Gould Ltd, bred form 11 generations of the Melody family to score Very Good or Excellent, this March 2017 born son of Larcrest Cayle backed by high constituents was purchased by D E Pyle of Exeter. Next in line was a genomically tested son of Pesky Trix from Aintree Holsteins; also achieving £2700 this April 2017 born bull backed by 10 generations was bought by Willis Dairy Farmers Ltd, Cholmondeley. £2500 was paid for the Reserve Champion, again from team Aintree, and was the choice of GW & J Mercer of Bolton.

FRIESIAN DISPERSAL

This month’s sale also incorporated the entire dispersal of unregistered British Friesian’s from Nicholls Farm,Nr.Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire having decided to cease milk production. Featuring 82 head within the milking portion, plus a handful of maiden heifers, this very sound and genuine herd of commercially managed cattle, who averaged 6058kg 3.57% 3.18% attracted keen interest particularly for the milking animals, with buyers recorded throughout Wales, the Midlands and even down to Kent. Topping the trade was a second calved cow who was due with her third in October to Skyhigh Patrol, sold giving 26 kg she was purchased by RH Lewis & Son of Oswestry. Messrs Lewis then paid £1550 for another second calved cow; sired by Benloyalwho had calved last October and was recently PD’d in-calf to Samson. Next at £1520 was a third calved cow who had freshened in January; sired by Meinse and purchased by EW Williams of Holywell.
