BORDER & LAKELAND CLUB SHOW & SALE

WEDNESDAY 20thJUNE 2018

Chart Topper Tops June Pedigree Sale

The June Border & Lakeland Holstein club show and sale had a fantastic offering of classy cows and heifers all giving large volumes of milk and many bred from world class pedigrees.  In total 160 dairy animals were sold, topping at 2,700gns with just over 50% of the freshly calved milking animals selling for or above £2000. The sale also included the dispersal of the Lonning pedigree herd on behalf of the Todhunter family.  This fine herd topped at 2,400gns to average almost £1500.

The show was sponsored by Zoetis, Cogent and Advanced Nutrition and judged by Jim Barr from the Bucklyvie herd in Fife.  He selected Stowbeck Masterful Nina as his overall Champion; she was consigned by Skirwith Hall Farms and sired by popular sire Masterful, this awesome udder heifer was also selected as the Best Udder in the show. Nina was sold for 2,500gns to the judge.

The Reserve Champion went to Espland Wickham Betsy consigned by Alan Cannon from Espland Hill Farm, Appleby.  She was sired by Silverridge V Wickham and sold for 2,450gns to Bradleys Farm, Lancashire.  Mr Cannon consigned four heifers in total placing first, second, third and fourth in the senior milking heifer class and all but one sold for or more than £2000 to average £2257.

The catalogue was packed with animals with amazing pedigrees and it was one of these special opportunities that topped the overall trading. Spotlight Rodanas Esmonique was consigned by Shaun Rennie from Brocklehll Farm, Ayr.  Esmonique is currently the number three gPLI Cow in the UK with an index of almost gPLI+£600.  She was sired by Holbra Inseme Rodanas and bred from the Lou Etta cow family, her dam has been a successful show cow for the famous Koepon Holstein herd in Holland.  Mr David Taylor owner of the well known Thornby Holstein herd near Wigton purchased this chart topping heifer for the top price of the day for 2,700gns.

The Kepculloch herd sold a number of very milky cows and heifers all from exceptional cow familes.  Selling for 2,400gns was Kepculloch Attic Summer bred from nine generations of Excellent or Very Good dams.  The third dam was Altona Lea Rudolph Summer EX95 who won the Royal Highland Show for the Steel family back in 2005.  This classy young heifer was purchased by Hamish Campbell from Auchalne Farm, Castle Douglas.

The sale included two consignments of well bred young-stock.  The first group was a consignment of heifers from the two time winner of the Top Dairy Farm in Scotland award that is presented annually at Agriscot.  The Bervie herd owned by the Colquhoun family who farm near Montrose in Angus is currently averaging over 11000kgs and the heifers were all sired by top genomic young sires from the WWS mating programme.  This quality group of recently bred heifers topped twice at 1,250gns to average £1126.  Topping at 1,250 was a daughter of Siemers Mogul Pety and bred from a Go-Farm Artes dam who gave over 10000kgs as a young two year old.

The other consignment of young bulling heifers was from JM & M Harris from Whitbarrow Farm, Penrith.  The Harris family have recently sold their farm and are in the process of dispersing their pedigree Holstein herd.  This well grown and well bred group of bulling heifers topped at 980gns on three occasions to average £912.

The next dairy sale at Border takes place on Wednesday 4thJuly and features over 200 dairy cattle in the Border Monthly Dairy Day sale.  Catalogues for this sale can be viewed online at www.harrisonandhetherington.co.ukor ordered from the Pedigree Office on 01228 406230.
