TRADE AS HOT AS THE WEATHER FOR WIRRAL DISPERSAL

The dispersal sale of the entire commercial, unregistered herd of Holstein dairy cattle took place at Beeston Castle Auction on Thursday 21stJune, on behalf of Philip and Jenny Harding (M D Harding & Partners) of Storeton House Farm, Storeton, Wirral, who had reluctantly decided to cease milk production.

A great crowd was in attendance once again, highlighting the importance of good marketing, excellent facilities and convenience purchasers get from holding sales in one central location at Beeston. Over 50 different buyers gathered, from both North and South Wales as well as through the Midlands and of course Cheshire and its surrounding counties. Right from the start there was an abundance of bidding, continuing throughout the sale for all groups.

Since moving to Storeton House Farm, the family had adopted a flying herd system, largely sourcing cattle in-calf heifers from 4yr testing areas, plus the odd imported group, and considering very few were home bred the herd displayed great uniformity throughout, with plenty of strength. The herd ran continually with Simental stock bulls, not recorded and utilised grass forage during the summer months.

Topping the trade was an in milk heifer carrying her second for October, sold giving 28kg having calved June 2017 and purchased for £1880, by an undisclosed North Wales client. That same purchaser also bought another heifer due with her second in September, also realising £1880. £1780 was paid for a Goldfarm daughter, fresh with her third in May, giving 36kg and purchased by IL & OG Roberts, Forden.  Also at £1780 was another May calved cow, sold giving 42kg, she was purchased by local clients JJ & AS Nicholas, Nr. Tarporley.

Such was the levelness and consistency of trade in the milking portion, a further thirty animals passed £1500;  plus 75 head had calved in 2017 and not detectably in-calf, averages came out very healthily.

AVERAGES:

261 Cows and Milking Heifers £1154.98.
