BORDER & LAKELAND CLUB SALE

WEDNESDAY 16TH JUNE 2010

Skirwith Hall show up in style!

Numbers of freshly calved cows and heifers were down in June at the Border & Lakeland Holstein club sale; however the quality was high with many super uddered animals selling.  There was an atmosphere of confidence with the weather and a future rise in milk price helping to improve the short term outlook for milk producers.

The event was sponsored by Paragon Vets and Cogent and judged by local young breeder Daniel Bargh from Woodclose Skelton.  He confidently tapped forward his champion and reserve with both heifers featuring in the top price league.

Champion was consigned by Skirthwith Hall Farms, she was sired by Comestar Lheros from an Excellent Igniter and then a Very Good grand dam with over 50 ton lifetime.  Stowbeck Lheros Connie sold for 1900gns and now joins the herd of JB&J Hanley, Manor House Farm, Edderside, Maryport.

The Reserve champion was purchased by the same buyer for 1850gns and went to Boustead Talent Naomi consigned by MW & JH Gaitskell.  She was silky black heifer and was sired by Ladino Park Talent from a Best from Roy with a high producing Black King for a third dam.

Top price went to one of the youngest heifers in the sale, Stowbeck Roger Pansy sired by Dalebank Zen Roger from Skirwith Hall Farms.  She was bred from a high producing family with the first three dams all producing over 11,000kgs.  She sold for 2000gns to JB&J Hanley, Manor House Farm, Edderside, Maryport.

Top price cow was placed first in her class and sold for 1950gns to JI Graham, Calvertsholm, Rigg, Gretna she was consigned by Skirwith Hall Farms, Stowbeck Almeria Anne sired by Pachecas Aaron Almeria.  She was giving almost 40kgs and was bred from a great line of Stowbeck cows with the grand dam classified Excellent with over 70 ton lifetime.

One of the big attractions to the June Border & Lakeland sale was the special consignment of young calves from the Newheaton herd owned by the Douglas family from Cornhill on Tweed in Northumberland.   The heifers were sired by Shottle, September Storm, Bolivia Allen and Gibson however one of the stars of this consignment was a heifer sired by one of Goldwyn’s hot young sons Gilllette Jordan.  Newheaton Jordan Selina attracted a lot of attention both for her fancy looks and her impressive pedigree, she sold for 1150gns to C Dent, Bridge End Farm, Kirkby Thore.

Newheaton Shottle Nina 2 sold for 1100gns to M Ridsdale & Son, Yew Tree Farm, Thomas Close, Calthwaite this was a daughter of Picston Shottle from a Very Good Roy and then going back to an Excellent third dam with over 80 ton lifetime.
