APPLE IS STAR OF NORTHERN LIGHTS -

FIRST CHOICE SELLS FOR 11500 GNS!

Cameron Baty, the noted showman with a larger than life character, from the North East organised a spectacular sale of top Holstein and Jersey heifers, which took place at Beeston Castle Auction on Thursday 2nd September. The Auctioneers made the comment that the selection of heifers and calves on offer was probably the best ever presented at one of their sales, not only for their depth of pedigree and genetic merit, but for the overall standard of conformation which was superb.

However after a miserable time with the weather in August, the sun came out and the rain stopped, enabling farmers to get on with their harvest and silage. As a consequence the attendance at the sale was affected, but nevertheless a good crowd was present and the cattle were distributed far and wide. In all, including the four countries forming the UK, the cattle were also distributed to Spain, Holland, Germany and the Republic of Ireland.

The top price was 11500 gns for the first choice of three calves due to be born next year sired by either Mr.Burns or Picolo Red out of the maiden heifer MS Apples T Andrea Red who is guaranteed to score (VG-yr), her dam being the $1 million KHW Regiment Apple Red (Ex94-5yr). She was purchased by Granja La Ponderosa for export to Cantabria in the North of Spain.

The next highest price was 7500 gns for the five month old Lillyhall Goldwyn Elegant ET from the Watson family of Cockermouth, Cumbria. This very special calf is full sister to the No.14 GTPI cow in the USA and has 7 generations of straight Excellent dams, her dam being the 12845 kg. 5.60% and 3.60% GBM Best Elegant (EX92-4yr). She was purchased by John Lomax to join his Chorlton Herd based Nr.Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire.

At 6000 gns was Cameron Baty’s Tynevalley Empire Kally, a May 09 daughter of New World Empire bred from 5 generations of top classified animals. She was purchased by an undisclosed Cheshire buyer. Following on in the price list was Shavington Wisconsin Raven Red from the Cottonabbotts Herd of CE Walley, Waverton, Chester. This yearling red heifer from this noted family sold to Mike Fuller, a herdsman with the Cottonabbotts Herd at Waverton.

Three animals made 5000 gns each; the first was Sterndale PS Erle from WJ Nadin & Co of Earl Sterndale, Buxton, a January 2010 Shottle daughter bred from 10 generations of cows in the top two grades and whose 4.dam was the former record priced 76000 gns Field of Dreams Formation Erle (Ex95-3E). She was purchased by Joseph Heler Farms for their Helton Herd at Audlem, Cheshire. Bill Nadin was in the money again selling the 4 month olf Sterndale Goldwyn Ruby ET to Richard Martin Greta Orton, Carlisle for the same price. This lovely calf was out of Sterndale Ruby Red ET (VG88-2yr) who sold for 10000 gns at the Holstein UK Centenary Sale last year. The final animal at this price was Holmland Damion Polly ET an April 2010 daughter of Erbacres Damion from the renowned Pledge family whose maternal sister by Goldwyn made 12000 gns last year. She was purchased by Albert Innes Smith of Newcastle upon Tyne.

There were just two bulls in the sale and they were maternal brothers by Million and Alexander consigned by Paul Mann of Cornwall. They were out of Misty Springs Shottle Satin (VG86-2yr), the Number 6 GLPI cow in the USA. Both sold for 3000 gns each and both were purchased by Diamond Genetics of Holland.

A small, but superb selection of Elite Jerseys sold very well and were led by the eight month old Potterswalls Glamours Pride, a daughter of the Potterswalls Belles Pride and out of Potterswalls Paramount Glamour (EX96-5E), a cow who is the sixth generation of cows classified in the top two grades and who already has a (VG88) daughter. This calf was purchased by J Pratt & Son, Leyburn, North Yorkshire. At 2900 gns was the first of two maternal sisters out of Skyhigh Sooner Veronica (EX92) a full sister to the world famous Huronia Centurion Veronica (Ex97-5E). This six month old calf, Karmadale Minister Veronica, consigned by Mark Truesdale of County Down, Northern Ireland is sired by Select-Scott Minister and sold to J Lomax & Son, Newcastle-under-Lyme. Her maternal sister, Potterswall Comerica Veronica, a daughter of Bridon Remake Comerica born in June this year sold for 2200 gns to Iwan Morgan, Carmarthen.
