Western Holstein Club's Wexham Cup Show & Sale Of Pedigree Holstein Bulls

Wright Manley are delighted to report a very successful sale for the 59th edition of the Western Holstein Club’s Wexham Cup Show & Sale of Pedigree Holstein Bulls sponsored by feed compounders, HJ Lea Oakes. The event attracted an entry of 85 bulls, of which 9 were not forward on the day, from the herds of leading breeders and the bulls consigned represented many of the world’s leading cow families.

The judge for the day was the well known Lancashire breeder, Jimmy Hull of the noted Fortland Herd. His Champion animal was Moordown Winston consigned by Ian and Karen Showell of Nuneaton; he is a son of Braedale Goldwyn and bred from 8 generations of top classified dams from the Blackrose family. In reserve was another Goldwyn son, Woodmarsh Luke from the Gould family of Bomere Heath, Shrewsbury who had a vintage day in the show ring and the salering.

In the prestigious Wexham Cup competition the Gould family – Mick and Jean and Mick Jnr and Katherine - provided the first three in the final line-up. The Wexham Cup is based on a combination of points gained on inspection of the bull, production and classification on the maternal line. Their winning bull was Woodmarsh Medley, a son of Bolivia Allen bred from 8 generations of VG/EX dams from their noted Melody family. The reserve for the Wexham Cup was their Reserve Champion on inspection, Woodmarsh Luke, who has seven generations of similarly classified dams from the great Lyme family whilst the third in the line-up was Woodmarsh Mervyn, another son of Bolivia Allen and also bred from the Lyme family.

Trade was much faster than perhaps might have been expected, given the uncertain climate. There was a great crowd of potential buyers assembled from Scotland to West Wales to Devon and undoubtedly the largest gathering of buyers for many years at this sale.  Many returned home without purchasing and the trade at the end of the day produced an averaged breaking the £2000 barrier and nine bulls selling for 3000 gns or more and achieving a wonderful top price of 7500 gns.

The top price also came from the Gould stable who averaged £3415.00 for their seven entries. The top seller was for the September 09 born 1st prize winning, Woodmarsh Zander ET, a son of Regancrest Design out of VG87-2yr 12000 kg daughter of Goldwyn from the Zandra family who trace their origins to the Ocean View herd in California. After a swift flurry of bidding the hammer was knocked down to Jim Reid buying for his Bengal Herd at Lockerbie, Dumfriesshire.

The second top price was 3600 gns and this bull also went to Scotland; Bidlea Tag Taurus, a June 09 son of Matson consigned by Ray Brown & Partners of Holmes Chapel bred from a 120 tonne production (Ex94-9E) member of their noted Tagasling herd sold to J & E Wilson & Son of Twynholm, Kirkcudbright, Dumfries and Galloway.

The Wexham Cup winner from the Goulds was next in order selling for 3400 gns to J E Brown & Sons Ltd of Elton, Chester whilst their third for the Wexham Cup sold for 3300 gns to join the Gest Herd of R Maskell and Partners of Talog, Carmarthenshire. Also at this figure was Riverdane Abion Red ET, the leading Red and White bull at the sale from Mark and Sue Nutsford. This son of Fradon Redliner out of a EX91-2E daughter of the famous Lavender Ruby Redrose EX96-3E sold to W Heron & Sons of Warcop, Appleby, Cumbria.

Next at 3050 gns was the very strong bull, Winton Black Rock from Peter Waring of Beverley. This June 09 son of the homebred Winton Rubam (by Bam Bam) from the Roxy family sold to Messrs Hadfield of Peak Forest, Buxton.

Three bulls sold for the level 3000 gns each; the first at this price was the Champion who was purchased by JR Beattie of Enville, Worcestershire. The next at this figure was Aintree Numerator, the leading member of a wonderful team of bulls from Richard and Ruth Pilkington’s Aintree Herd based near Wrexham. This son of Picston Shottle from the noted high butterfat Nugget family sold to LE & GE Bothwell of Newchurch, Burton-on-Trent. The third at this figure was the lead member of another good team of bull’s from Bill Nadin’s Derbyshire based Sterndale Herd; Sterndale Ghoul is a son of Dudoc Mr Burns bred from the Ghost family and sold to Allen Brothers of Penley, Wrexham whilst another member of this family from the same home but by Goldwyn sold for 2900 gns to Philip Williams of Haverfordwest for his Willholme Herd.
