The North Eastern Holstein Club held its annual Christmas Show and sale at Leyburn Auction Mart on Friday 19th November. While numbers forward were significantly down on a year ago there was a good stamp of animal on show and this was reflected in the solid trade which ensued despite a general dip in the market of late.

Andy Stonehouse of the Norton herd at Pickhill, Thirsk, one of the clubs younger Holstein enthusiasts took the centre of the ring to judge and in his Champion chose the 3rd calver, Bickleygate Roy Vanity from Mark Day and family at Ingleby Greenhow, Stokesley after she won the Cow in Milk class. She then went on to sell as Lot 1 making the days top price of £2100 to Mr Harrison from Kings Meadburn, Cumbria, who purchased three of the ten lots forward.

The club was grateful to consigners from the Aytonian, Bickleygate, Dalesend, and Studdah herds who consigned cattle and also to sponsors Semex. Reserve Champion went to the winning in milk heifer from the Petch’s of Aytonian at Great Ayton with their young Ladino Park Talent daughter, Aytonian Tamora 215 who calved in October and was giving in excess of 30 litres per day. Top priced heifer was another from Aytonian at £1911 this time by Comestar Outside who sold to Messrs Wilkinson.

Averages: 5 Cows in milk £1739, 5 Heifers in Milk £1661
