The decision by Geoff and Felicity Bosley and their son Richard to give up dairying brought a good crowd to the sale of the adult portion of their Nevilles herd on farm near Wantage, Oxfordshire. Although not held in a prime dairying area, the sale brought purchasers from Hampshire, Powys and Glamorgan and a good contingent from Leicestershire.
The top price was 2,700gs for Nevilles Tait Heidi, one of a load of 33 head, purchased on behalf of the Baltier Farming Co, Whithorn, Wigtownshire. This second calver by Cedarwal Tait gave over 10,000kg in her first lactation and was back in calf to Picston Shottle. The Shottle milking daughters were quite a feature of the sale and two sold for 2,600gs and 2,500gs to A.S.Coles & Son, Banbury for their Colespark herd and local farmer Richard Manners, Faringdon, while a freshly calved heifer by the herd’s stock bull Hydaways Komplex joined the load to the Baltier herd for 2,400gs.
Brian Sercombe of the Foresthill herd, Lutterworth, Leicestershire was a good buyer, acquiring the Excellent fourth calver Nevilles Allen Judybel for 2,300gs, and also took her maternal sister, who was the top priced in calf heifer, at 1,780gs. Maiden heifers sold to 1,200gs for a Komplex daughter from the Miss America family, taken by Nick Goss, Devizes.
