One of the largest one day Holstein dispersal sales in the West Country for some time took place at Newton St Cyres, near Exeter, when the Browne family dispersed their Winscott herd. Over 400 cattle went under the hammer in just over 7 hours and were dispersed throughout the region, with buyers also coming from Sussex, South Wales and Staffordshire.
Top price was 2,900 gs, paid by F.J & M.J.Hodges for the second calver Winscott Wildman Balise, to join their Blackdown herd at Yarcombe, Honiton. Her dam was one of a number of cows that originally came from the famous Weeton herd, dispersed last year. The Brownes were great devotees of red & white Holsteins and the catalogue contained a large number of red or red factor animals. Winscott Rustler Marlene Red, due with her second calf in September to Ladino Park Talent, made 2,750gs to David Lewis, Cullompton, who also bought a Talent daughter for 2,400gs. Marlene’s yearling brother Winscott Marcus Red made 2,400gs to N.A & H.M.Colwill, Bude, Cornwall.
The large group of in calf heifers were a feature of the sale, selling to 2,550gs for a daughter of Pursuit September Storm, while top price among the maiden heifers was 2,100gs for Winscott Bolton Renita, taken by Richard Gay, Axminster. Calves at foot sold to 1,600gs for another Bolton daughter from the Weeton Ebony family, purchased by D.R.Lawrence, Ottery St Mary.
