A good crowd of enthusiastic dairy farmers and pedigree breeders attended an open day at Winterbourne Monkton, near Swindon, Wilts to view The C.B.Cooper Partnership’s celebrated Noremead herd, which last year won the Holstein UK Premier Pedigree Herd Competition.
After an inspection of the outstanding herd of cows and an excellent lunch, sponsored by Holstein UK, there was a sale of some of the cream of the herd’s youngstock. Considerable interest was shown in the stylish Picston Shottle daughter of the herd’s current leading show cow Noremead Revolution Lys, who is the fifth successive generation of Excellent cows. Bidding reached 5,000gs before the hammer fell to Ben Llewellin, who takes her to his family’s Clarby herd in Pembrokeshire.
Another heifer to catch the eye was a Baxter daughter from the old established Warner family, and Messrs Llewellin were keen bidders again, but had to give best at 3,600gs to a determined Peter Prior, bidding on behalf of Designer Holsteins, Essex. The last calf in the sale, a two month old red daughter of Poos Stadel Classic out of one of the herd’s best cows, Noremead Knight Sume (Ex-92), also produced spirited bidding with Nick Cobb finally acquiring her for the Chalclyffe herd, Dorset.
A feature of the event was a guest consignment of Jerseys from Barry and Jenny Daw’s Bluegrass herd. They offered seven heifers with deep pedigrees from the heart of their outstanding, prizewinning herd and these sold to 3,000gs paid by Messrs Brassington, Telford, Shropshire for the broken coloured yearling Bluegrass Signatures Lady Prancer, bred from 4 generations of Excellent cows from one of the best families. L.Williamson, Somerset, purchased two super in calf heifers at 2,600 and 2,100gs and Bluegrass Sergeants Snowqueen, that won several prizes as a calf last year was sold for 2,550gs to Mark Davis, Devon.
Noremead herd managers Jeff and Anthea Daw own some Jerseys of their own and sold a Bridon Excitation daughter out of their prizewinning Sowden Juno Ceres 2 for 1,800gs to James Evans and Alex Hurd of Narberth and Tavistock, Devon respectively.
