Mossrigg Atlas Adorn VG86-2yr sold for 3,800gns

One of the largest Holstein dispersal sales to take place this year took place on Thursday & Friday 16th & 17th June at Dolphenby Farm near Penrith in Cumbria.  The Mossrigg herd was owned by Jonathan and Joanne Fisher, who, in a short period of time had developed a fantastic herd.  It was built of sound foundations with a balanced approach to breeding a high producing, high type, long life cow.   The results spoke for themselves with milk production averaging almost 10,000kgs and the catalogue boosting numerous Excellent and Very Good classified cows.

So, with all the boxes ticked it was no surprise that the Mossrigg Dispersal attracted a huge crowd of buyers.  Animals were sold into twenty five different counties across the UK and volume buyers made the most of the quantities that were on offer.

Top price was for Mossrigg Rox Snowdrift, a beautiful heifer from three generations of Excellent or Very Good dams.  She was sired by Holmland Rory (Talent son from Durham Roxan) and was due in September with her second.  This VG86 2yr displayed enormous potential selling for 4,700gns to Duncan Horsley, Woodhouse Farm, Penrith.  Her dam had sold earlier in the sale for 3,500gns to JM & J Fisher, Yanwath Woodhouse, Penrith, an Excellent 92 FBI daughter with almost 13,000kgs produced as three year old.

One of the highlights of the sale was the daughters of Picston Shottle with over forty selling in total.  Second in the leading prices was one of his daughters, Mossrigg Shottle Beautexus  VG85 2yr. She sold to Andrew Wilson, Carskerdo Farm, Fife for 4,100gns.

It was another Shottle daughter leading the way at 4,00gns, this time from the much respected Sweet family from Conant-Acres in the USA.   Mossrigg Shottle Sweety VG87 2yr crosses the pound to join her new herd in Ireland owned by Gerry Odonnell, Rossigh Farm, Enneskillen.

Mossrigg Shottle Wonder VG85 2yr sold for 3,900gns to Sue & Richard Armstrong, Wolfa, Penrith.   Wonder was the fourth generation of Very Good dams, she sold freshly calved in February giving 40kgs and had a close to perfect udder.

With Blue Tongue regulations now over it was noticeable to see how the Irish buyers influenced the trade.   And purchasing one the undoubted stars in the dispersal was John Stewart from Portaferry, Co. Down.  He paid 3,800gns for Mossrigg Atlas Adorn VG86 2yr, a classy young heifer due to Gillette Jordan with her second calf in September.

Also selling for 3,800gns was Mossrigg Shottle Breeze VG87 3yr.  She was in her second lactation a looked like she could develop into a high scoring Excellent cow in the future.   She was a fourth generation of Very Good cows going back to the well known Beechbarn herd.

The sale had many highlights, but one to mention was the young heifer calves born in 2011.  They were top quality and mainly sired by leading AI sires such as  Jeeves, Bolton, Matson, Scooby-Duu, and Reece.  Volume buyer Mr David Todd, Drumglass House, Co. Tyrone purchased numerous calves one of the picks from his group was a Bolton calf from a VG 86 Elto dam with high fat and protein, she sold for 1,000gns.  Top price calf was Mossrigg Jordan Martha born in April.  She was sired by Gillette Jordan and from the Moet Manger Martha family, she now joins the neighbouring farm of the Wilson’s from Skirwith Hall Farms for 1550gns.
