Champion lot 14 with Ian Plews from Cogent, Cheryl Watson from Paragon, David McCormick with Cormick Shottle Magic and judge Mr Steven Innes

There was an extensive array and variety on offer at Borderway, Carlisle on Wednesday 20th July for the Border & Lakeland Holstein Club Show & Sale.  Buyers from four Countries and ten Counties packed the ring for this sale which also featured the complete dispersal of the Dunnottar herd from Aberdeen and a special consignment of British Friesian heifers from the Lismulligan herd in Fife.  Drointon Holsteins from Staffordshire had a consignment of show calves with deep pedigrees complemented by a consignment of bulling heifers from the local Miltonmains herd.

Steven Innes from the New Meadow Herd in Nairn travelled down to judge the show.  Although some of the heifers selling were not entered for the show he confidently placed the classes with his champion coming from the heifer in milk class.  She was Cormick Shottle Magic, a daughter of Picston Shottle from a wonderful Canadian family.  She was consigned by D & BT McCormick, Caste Douglas and was purchased by the judge for 2,300gns.  The Reserve Champion was Bowberhill Roy Lulu, a daughter of Roylane Jordan from the Lulu family. She was consigned by Messrs W. M. Hutchinson, Kirby Stephen and sold for 1,800gns; she also joins the New Meadow herd in Nairn.

The top price league table was lead by two animals not entered for the show and consigned by Kevin & Christine Wilson of Wood Farm, Carlisle.  Warnelview Encredible Viola, a daughter of Krull Encredible and out of Stillbrook Viola 5 EX93 7E LP110 made top price.  This beautiful young heifer sold for 2,600gns.  Selling for 2,350gns was Warnelview Bonair Dance, a daughter of Karona Bonair from an Excellent Comestar Outside bred from the famous Ocean-View Elevation Debbie in the USA, both heifers were purchased by the judge.  Also selling for 2,350gns was Snow Appleby, a daughter of Ladino Park Talent from a VG88 Convincer dam.  This amazing uddered heifer was consigned by G & M Wilson & Son, Low Field, Appleby and was purchased by J Harrison, Wickerfield, Penrith.

First place cow in milk and top price cow was Kingscaird Aspen Briana, a daughter of EK-Oseeana Aspen and bred from the much admired Wedgwood Briana family in Canada.  She was consigned by Mr Peter Kemp, Cairdhillock, Aberdeen she was purchased by the judge for 2,300gns

In the maiden heifer section Drointon Holsteins from Staffordshire sold three well bred show calves from their leading cow families.  Topping the heifer calves was Drointon Geronimo Amber Anne 2, a daughter of Syke Geronimo from four generation of Excellent or Very Good dams tracing back to a Very Good Mark Anthony in Ontario, Canada.  This January calf sold for 1,400gns and was purchased by F Awde, Broadmeadows, Penrith.

Dunnottar Herd

As many of the buyers commented prior to the sale commencing on what a very good herd Mr Len Duguid had, it was not surprising then that these opinions were endorsed by the prices.  Mr Duduid had used a fine selection of top AI sires in the herd resulting in a powerful, deep bodied animals with a natural will to milk.

Topping the sale was a daughter of Emerald Acres Baxter, recently calved and producing very well.  This heifer had tremendous width and strength and displayed a wonderful full udder, she sold for 2,600gns.

Selling for 2,400gns was Dunnottar Homestead Zenaan, an impressive daughter of Bomaz Homestead.  The Homestead daughters were a real feature of the sale displaying well attached udders, strong frames and great legs & feet.   Not far behind and selling for 2,300gns was Dunnottar Homestead Roselin, a freshly calved heifer displaying an excellent ability to milk.  Dunnottar Freeman Yuta, a daughter of Braedale Freeman sold for 2,200gns these heifers join the herd of C Innes & Sons, Drumduan, Nairn.

Lismulligan Young-stock Sale

One of the most admired British Friesian herds in the UK consigned an excellent group of heifers from their leading female lines.  A feature of the British Friesian is their longevity and with so many cows in the Lismulligan herd lasting for eight, nine, ten and more lactations it was no surprise that overstocking was going to be problem this winter.  So the decision was taken to reduce numbers and an unselected group of heifers from just under a year old were offered for sale.

Starting of their sale was a number of in calf heifers due at the end of the year.  Topping this section was Adams Cherry 10, a daughter of Blackisle Kilmuir from Adams Cherry 2 EX92 2E.  She was in calf to Lismulligan Gamber and sold for 1,400gns.

The maiden heifers were very stylish and many future stars graced this section.  Topping the sale was a beautiful April calf, Adams Cherry 13, a daughter of Deangate Prince maternal sister to the previous mentioned in calf heifer.   She sold for 1,450gns; both heifers were purchased by the same undisclosed buyer.

A & AE Harrison, Round Hill, Silloth purchased two super in calf heifers both for 1,350gns.  The first was a daughter of Blackisle Kilmuir from an Excellent 91 3E dam with high butterfat & protein.   Second was a fancy daughter of Lismulligan Bellboy, she displayed great udder promise, both heifers sold in calf to Lismulligan Gambler due in the fall.

The Lawson family would like to thank everyone who supported their sale and hope the heifers develop into great herd favourites for their new owners.  Due to the success of this sale a second sale is already in the planning for 2013.
