The Brynfro herd of Holstein Friesians was dispersed near Maesteg, Glamorgan, for Mrs Daphne Major and her son Tony and met a very good trade from the large attendance of buyers from across South Wales as well as Gloucestershire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire.  A feature of this sale where the cattle were reared at over 700 feet above sea level was their longevity with 26 of the cows sold, virtually half, having had 5 or more calves.

 

The top price was 2,100gns for the third calver Brynfro Integrity Rosemarie 11th which had calved in February and was scanned 10 weeks in-calf to the Aberdeen Angus stock bull.  She was giving 29.4kgs when sold.  Her sire was Gest Integrity and was out of a 10,469kg daughter of Gormal Bell Black.  The buyers were N W Williams & Sons of Usk, Monmouthshire.

 

The same buyers paid 1,900gns for the sixth calver Brynfro Integrity Rumex 3rd which had calved in March.

 

The 2nd calver Brynfro Blackbond Essay sold for 1,850gns to W J Thomas of Pontardulais, Swansea.  She had calved in May and was by Gornal Blackbond and off a 11,326kgs Gornal Bell Black sired cow.

 

The same buyer gave 1,800gns for her maternal sister Essay 4th, a 3rd calver by Gest Integrity.

 

Served heifers sold to 1,420gns, bulling heifers to 840gns, yearling heifers to 600gns and heifer calves to 520gns.

 

Averages:

58 cows and milking heifers £1,384.19 (including 21 heifer calves at £472.50)

18 served heifers  £1,251.25

26 maiden heifers     £585.17

1 bull calf at £241.50

1 Aberdeen Angus stock bull at £1,050.00

104 lots  £1,147.23
