21-10-2011 - Border & Lakeland Club Show & Sale

<<< Back to Sale Reports

The monthly pedigree dairy show and sale at Borderway Mart on 19th October saw a variety of fresh Holstein and Friesian heifers and two dispersal batches of in calf and maiden heifers.

The overall average of newly calved cows and heifers of just over £2000 a piece doesn’t tell the whole story because the trade, as keen as ever, was much more quality selective than previous sales.

Milkers with good udders and the prospect of wearing well and with enough substance were in great demand, eight making over £2100. More ordinary ones sold well enough but the difference between the trade for the best was noticeable.

Top price of the day was 2500gns for a second prize winning heifer from Andrew Carter & family’s acclaimed ‘Gerrard ’ Herd near Wigton, one month calved and from a line of VG and EX, 60 to 90 tonne lifetime dams of the ‘Winke’ family. This heifer was by Gilette Final Cut.

The Champion female was a lovely white young second calf cow from Edward Hewson of Upperlocharwoods Cottage, Dumfries. Carrying the Jamison ‘Firth’ prefix, and by the Goldwyn Lee I Sara bull Firth Bullion, she traces back to the respected Hillhead Anabelle Family, and made 2250gns.

Another Firth Bullion daughter, from Kenny Robison’s ‘Hebrides’ Herd on the Isle of Gigha, made 2100gns.

Also at 2250gns was a heifer from Messrs Gaitsgill Boustead Herd, sired by a ‘Warnelview’ bull and boasting a ‘Reba’ pedigree full of long lasting high butter fat and protein yielding cows.

Following the Border and Lakeland club sale was a batch of strong, nicely bred January calving heifers from Messrs Fiddler’s ‘Rolinjo’ Herd, these averaged just short of £1600 to a top of 1800gns for a mid January calving daughter of Major Bolivia Aden.

Ending the sale was another dispersal consignment of maiden heifers from Messrs Lawson of the Sweethope Herd of Mill Farm, Middleton, Morpeth. Mostly Morwick bred bull these averaged just over £1000 a piece to a top of £1134.
