The eighteenth annual Holsworthy Dairy Evening held at Holsworthy Livestock Market on Thursday 3 November 2011 saw a prize fund of £4100. A quality entry of dairy cattle from across the South West saw a massive crowd of Dairy Farmers attend and with a packed ringside of buyers an exceptional trade was seen.

Fittingly taking the top price of the evening was the overall champion and first prize cow in the show from Treginegar Dairy Farms of Padstow with their second calver “Woodlake Dragon Bargain VG88” who was sired by Overside Dragon, she sold to fierce bidding and the hammer finally fell at £2800 to Graham and Lloyd Duke of Launceston.

The reserve overall champion and first prize heifer was also from the Treginegar consignment and was one of the leading top prices of the evening with “Scraesdon Shottle Flint 8” a heifer by Picston Shottle which sold for £2400 to Mr Eddy of Truro. Treginegar’s outstanding consignment of quality cattle averaged a very creditable £2272.

Mr Gary Richards of Helston sold a cracking heifer “Richwartha Stormatic Snowdrop” by Comestar Stormatic to £2420, our second highest price of the evening. Matt and Becky Jenkin of Helston sold “Nadrid Mary 5” by Ladino Park Talent with two generations of EX cows behind her, she sold to £2300.

Also at £2300 was the only red and white heifer forward from Mr JG Mitchell of Lostwithiel with “Redsky Classic Lady Red ET” sired by Poos Stadel Classic with four generations of VG/EX behind her. The second highest priced cow the evening was from Mr Peter Blake of Torpoint with “Whitsand Outside Joy GP84” by Comestar Outside and having calved to her second she sold well to £2300.

Several other heifers sold in excess of £2000 and this very successful evening sale was a real positive boost for the dairy sector, the following exceptional averages were achieved:

First quality heifers        £2014

Second quality heifers   £1602

First quality cows          £2005
