The Western Holstein Club’s final monthly Show and Sale on behalf of their members took place at Beeston on Friday, 25th November; judge for the day was Judith Bowes who farms locally near Tarporley. For her Champion she selected Longfont Magot Dolly, a daughter of Charpentier Magot from Giles Dodd of Dodleston, Nr. Chester and in reserve was another Magot daughter, Woodmarsh Mag Hatlady 89th from M & JC Gould Ltd of Bomere Heath, Shrewsbury.
A good trade was experienced throughout but trade for the best heifers with long and deep pedigrees were on fire with plenty of interest from many different areas. Six animals sold for 3000 gns or more but it was the only cow in this bracket that secured the top price of the day of 4100 gns; Galastar Shottle Melody ET (VG85 & SP) from Ian and Philomena Scarisbrick of Goostrey, Nr. Middlewich, is an outstanding third calf daughter of Shottle with a PLI of £+174 and is indeed the 8th generation of cows classified in the top two grades. She gave 10000 kg at 4.51% butterfat and 3.38% protein with her second calf and was sold giving 40 kg fresh with her third. After lots of interest from several bidders the hammer was eventually knocked down to join the Caeremlyn Herd of Henllan Farms Ltd at Whitland Carmarthenshire.
The next in the price list was Dunnerdale Shaquille Pretzel, by Deslacs Shaquille and bred from 6 generations of cows classified EX/VG; she won 3rd in her class and was sold giving 37.4 kg.to J T Parkin of Barnard Castle Co. Durham. Mr. Parkin also purchased the preceding heifer from the same home; Dunnerdale Bolivia Dawn, a four generation VG/Ex by Magor Bolivia Allen daughter was sold giving 29.4 kg and sold for 3850 gns.
Another outstanding and beautifully bred heifer was Hully Atlas Pam 53rd from Rob Barnett of Whitchurch; this heifer, who was not shown in the show classes, has 4 Excellent dams and a VG86 sister was sold giving 34 kg to Gerwyn Vaughan of Boncath, Pembrokeshire for 3700 gns. Another outstanding heifer that was also not shown was Kingold Shottle Diplomat 3rd from Terry Goldstraw of Audlem. She is from an old established and very successful cow family and has seven generations of VG/Ex dams in her pedigree and sold for 3500 gns to Harri Evans of Anglesey for his Ceinwen Herd.
The only other animal to break 3000 gns mark and selling for this figure was Simon and Claire Powell’s Burlane Shottle Tracy from the Wilsondale Triuna family which sold to Henllan Farms Ltd. At just 50 gns less at 2950 gns was Woodmarsh Mag Helen 130th from M& JC Gould which sold to Gerwyn Vaughan giving 43.6 kg daily. The Champion heifer was next in the price list; she has an EX90 Jogger dam and was also purchased by Mr. Vaughan for 2850 gns.
