The Western Holstein Club’s Monthly Show and Sale for March attracted an improved entry of 95 Cows and Calved Heifers as well as six heifer calves for its most recent event. Judge for the day was Tecwyn Davies of Henllan Farms Ltd based at Whitland, Carmarthenshire who selected Ryisle Pledge Margaret 135th from Messrs. P., JA & MJ Isles of Greenhalgh, Preston as his Champion. In Reserve was Enchanted Final Cut Oleander, a daughter of Gillette Final Cut from Enchanted Holsteins of Elswick, Preston. These two heifers stood 1st and 2nd in the Junior Heifer Class.
The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the sale of the first prize senior heifer, Burlane Talent Roy Tracy ET from Simon and Clare Powell of Burlton, Shrewsbury. This outstanding daughter of Talent is bred from eight successive generations of dams all classified Excellent from the heart of the Wilsondale Triuna family. She sold for 8000 gns which is the second highest price ever achieved at the Western Club Sale for a calved heifer. (The highest price recorded was 8200 gns for a Woodmarsh heifer at the March 2010 Sale). She was purchased by the judge for his Caeremlyn Herd. Also purchased by the judge was the Champion heifer, a daughter of Windy-Knoll-View Power for 2700 gns and Bidlea Scooby Tagasling, by Go-Farm Allen Scooby-Duu from Ray Brown and Partners of Holmes Chapel.
A further sixteen heifers made from 2000 to 2300 gns on a day when quality was particularly good but trade was considerably back on prices received just a month ago perhaps by as much as £300 per head when quality is taken into account.
Also selling particularly well were a small consignment of heifer calves from John and Ruth Eardley’s Market Drayton based Holly Herd which sold to 950 gns for a seven week old daughter of R-E-W Seaver and averaged £806.75 for six.
