The decision by Steve Hart and his family to disperse their Actonelm herd of Holsteins established over 60 years ago drew a huge crowd to their Monmouth farm with large loads travelling to West Wales and the West Country.
Roger Morse of Carmarthen purchased the two top prices, one of which was the front cover girl on the sale catalogue – the October calved red and white heifer Actonelm Dice Scarlet Red VG86 sold for 4,400gns. Her six month old heifer calf by Shanael Talent Alex was purchased by Richard Thomas of Carmarthen for his Churchvale herd.
The second top price was 3,800gns paid for the VG85 black and white heifer Actonelm Pernod Snowflake which calved in February and giving 35.2kgs. She was the fourth successive generation to be classified Very Good.
The well bred calved heifer Actonelm Empire Gail VG86, a daughter of the eighth generation Excellent Smartgrove Atom Gail, sold for 3,600gns to Somerset buyers R G & G E Pole. She had been bred back to Picston Shottle for August. Her mother had been purchased earlier in the day for 2,700gns by Robert Jones for the Hollysprings herd at Raglan, Monmouthshire.
Sion Davies of Carmarthen added the VG87 calved heifer Actonelm Matson Zisky 2 due in June with her next calf by Gillette Jordan to his newly established herd already numbering 500 cows for 3,000gns.
It was another red and white animal that led the served heifers section with a peak of 2,850gns. Purchasing the October calving Actonelm Bookman Beaujolais Red 2 were Pembrokeshire buyers K W Jenkins & Son. She was a daughter of West Port Bookman Red and out of 9 generations of cows in the top two grades.
The three year old stock bull Shanael Talent Alex sired by Ladino Park Talent and bred from 8 generations of Excellent cows sold for 2,000gns to M J & S C Pugh of Hereford who also purchased 13 heifer calves.
