The Western Holstein Club’s Monthly Show and Sale attracted an entry 73 Head for its May sale. Judge for the day was William Taylor of the Carlisle based Harras Herd who selected his Champion from Marshall and Patsy Barnett of Twemlow, Nr. Holmes Chapel; this heifer was the Bolton daughter, Tameside Charity 8th who was just 25 months of age. In reserve was Aintree Lightning Tellar, from Aintree Holsteins Ltd of Hope, Nr.Wrexham, with a daughter of Lylehaven Lightning out of an EX92-2E dam who was the sixth generation of cows classified in the top two grades.

Trade was a little hit and miss with the attendance undoubtedly affected by the good silaging weather. However cows and all the best and medium heifers sold well, but the few second quality heifers on offer were definitely harder to clear.

The Aintree Herd, the property of Richard and Ruth Pilkington led the price stakes with their outstanding Reserve Champion; this superbly bred heifer had calved at the beginning of the month and was sold giving 30.5 kg daily. There was lots of interest in her, but the successful bidder was Matthew Armour for his noted Annandale Herd at Moffat, Dumfriesshire.

The Pilkington’s also made a major consignment of young stock from their herd and it was a ninemonth old heifer from this section of the sale that eventually attracted the top bid of the day. Aintree Iota Nugget B ET is a daughter of Regancrest Altaiota and out of the 2010 All Britain Junior cow, Aintree Goldwyn Nugget B (VG88 & SP) who gave 11142 kg 5.24% butterfat and 3.44% protein with her second lactation and of course is from the leading family in the herd. This beautiful was again secured by Matthew Armour for his Annandale Herd.

The second highest price of the sale was 3000 gns for the second cow in the ring from Riverdane Holsteins of Middlewich; Upsall Sho Me ET (VG87-2yr) is a fresh second calf daughter of Picston Shottle and was bred by Ian Dickson and who has five straight

Excellent dams as well as two VG sisters. She was sold to Mark Lee of Northampton for his Crystalclear Herd.

The third top seller was the third prize junior heifer, Enchanted Final Cut Honey from Enchanted Holsteins of Preston; this beautiful April calved heifer and member of the noted ‘White Cow’ family, was sold giving 34 kg and made 2500 gns to Distinctive

Holsteins of Dutton, Nr. Warrington. Next inline was the Champion which sold for 2200 gns to the Judge, William Taylor.
