19-07-2012 - The Orchard and Barrina Dispersal

<<< Back to Sale Reports

Phillip and Barry Green’s ‘Orchard’ and ‘Barrina’ dispersal sale produced considerable national interest at Sedgemoor Auction Centre and led to the day’s top priced cows at 2100gns for ‘Orchard Linda 32nd (VG85-2)’ by ‘Outside’ and ‘Orchard Charity 9th (GP84)’ by ‘Baxter’. The 11 calved heifers sold to average £2,004 and topped at 2050gns for the June calved ‘Orchard Samantha 13th’ by ‘Sir Vanetas Vince’ and out of two generations of EX dams. In fairness the current trading conditions and the fact that the herd was loose housed resulted in a more selective trade but despite this the 66 cows averaged £1730.00 (with ‘A’ lots). If the milk trade was off the boil the trade for the followers was on fire, for served heifers down to yearlings. Their Incalf heifers sold to 1920gns for ‘Foxhole Miami Pamela’ from the ‘Crichel Pamela’s’ and due in September.

Of their maiden heifers ‘Barrina Fever Arlene’ stole the limelight selling for 2300gns to fellow South West Breeder David Norman of ‘Ciderhouse’.  Their last lot of the day, the 11 month old ‘Orchard Blackbird 33rd' by ‘Crackholm Fever’ sold for 1600gns and travels to Sussex.  Month old heifer calves by ‘Allen’ of the ‘Belle’ dam sold to 920gns.

The day brought to an end 67 years of dairy farming for the family and was a very difficult decision but one that was well rewarded with the following excellent averages;
