30-07-2012 - Flying trade at Saltergate sale with 50 x £2,000 prices

<<< Back to Sale Reports

Despite the worrying economic conditions and fine summer weather concentrating farmers’ minds on harvesting both grass and grain, auctioneers Norton & Brooksbank report an excellent trade at Ben Harcastle & Sons sale of the entire milking portion and crop of served heifers from their first class, long established Saltergate herd, sold on farm near Harrogate on Tuesday this week.

This was the first sale we have done where the whole herd was tested by Wisemans Dairies to discover those cows that tested positive to produce “A2” milk for those people with a dairy product intolerance. The information was shared with their customers only and clearly produced one major bidder who purchased 18, converting his herd to produce A2 milk entirely

A packed sale ring saw 38 buyers from as far afield as Kent, Sussex, Clwyd and Carmarthen and 35% of the milking herd making 2,000 guineas or more. Several other potential buyers left empty handed after a blistering first ½ hour which saw the opening 27 lots – cows milking in their 4th – 8th lactations average £1,747. The trade continued at a high level right to the end with a top price of 3,500 guineas (twice).

The 3 animals that made over 3,000 guineas were all from the famous Miss America family, originating from Alan Swale’s great import Staffordshire Miss America EX-92 47 Star Brood cow. Two sisters shared top honours with Saltergate Miss America 13 VG-85 2yr by Scooby-Duu selling for 3,500 guineas to Messrs P.H Hall & Son for their Ryburn herd near York and at the same price Mr G.T Booth acquired Saltergate Miss America 16, an in-calf heifer by Shottle, due in November to McCormick, for his Dowshawdale herd near Keighley.  The Damion sister to the dam of these two heifers made 3,200 guineas to Edward & daughter Georgina Fort for their Silmoor herd also near Keighley.

The sale was greatly helped by a number of big volume buyers, which included Mr W.N Avison from Leyburn who claimed 24, Farley Farms from Reading also with 24 and Messrs A Goddard & Son who took 19 back to Kent.  The result showed that the decision to sell on farm was absolutely right and with good promotion and knowledge of buyers an excellent result can be achieved, even in these tricky times.
