SAHARA GO TOP AT BRISTOL

The first edition of the Southern Classic at Bristol took place on 4th April 2013 within the Bristol Sale Centre, the weather was more typical of mid winter than an April Spring day with swirling snow and low temperatures combined with a wind chill that would have discouraged the most determined. However, the sale was well supported with buyers and bidders from all the home Nations in attendance to see the trade top at 7,000gns. It was also clear to see that the trade was very selective with a number of animals passed not realising vendors expectations.

Topping the day’s trade was Moorshard Talented Shower Red VG89 with an Excellent mammary consigned by Sahara Holsteins, Magor, Monmouthshire. She was a beautiful young cow sired by Ladino Park Talent with a close to perfect udder, David Jones had earlier commented “...that this was the best cow in milk he had ever offered at public auction”. Talented Shower had been Interbreed Champion Heifer in milk at the Royal Welsh Show in 2011 and was due with her third in September. She is bred from the world renowned Shower family originally from Glen Drummond famous for its proven sires and prolific bull dams. Moorshard Talented Shower Red was sold for 7,000gns to an undisclosed buyer from Carmarthenshire.

One of the pedigrees in the catalogue that had attracted a lot of interest was that of Willsbro Lila Z Altaross consigned by Ashlea Holsteins, Bristol. She was a daughter of Bosside Altaross recently calved on the 14th March, Lila Z lived up to all expectations with a classy two year olds udder and frame. Her dam was Acecroft Goldwyn Lila Z VG87 2yr who sold in the first EX Factor sale for 27,000gns to the Willsbro herd next dam is the All Canadian Lylehaven Lila Z EX94 a modern day legend with the Holstein breed. This beautiful two year sold for 5,600gns and now joins the herd of Larchwood Holsteins, Caldicot, Monmouthshire.

Progeny from Tri-Day Ashlyn EX96 has been in big demand ever since she hit the lime light as a three year old during World Dairy Expo in 2000 and especially after she was Supreme Champion at both World Dairy Expo and the Royal Winter Fair the following year. Her daughters went on to be All Americans with a number of her great granddaughters topping type charts around the globe. One of the star lots selling in the Southern Classic was St. Brides Ashlyn Seagirl consigned by G. Lewis, Haverfordwest. She was sired by Gen-I-Beq Seagual from Sterndale Ashlyns Gold VG89 that sold for 20,000gns in the Sale of the Century next dam is a Durham daughter of Ashlyn that won Intermediate Champion at the National Holstein Show in 2010. She was bought by an undisclosed Pembrokeshire buyer.

SP & SR Davies, Hebron, consigned a Gillette Windbrook daughter from their much admired and sought after Rosina family. Her dam is Castellhyfryd Jasper Rosina VG88 2yr next dam Saxelby Aaron Rosina EX95-5E, she is also grand dam to Castellhyfryd Spirte Rosina EX93-2E one the UK’s best show cows and All Britain for the last two years. This very stylish heifer sold for 3,500gns to G. Lewis, Haverfordwest. There was also an embryo package offer from Castellhyfryd Spirte Rosina EX93-2E by Mr Atwood Brokaw selling for 800gns per embryo to David McMiken, Castle Douglas, Scotland.

Loford Fever Marci consigned by Loford Holsteins, Bideford, Devon had all the makings of an amazing show heifer. Sired by Crackholm Fever and from a Excellent 92 Shottle from an Excellent 91 Rudolph from Henkeseen Mark Marci EX94-3E GMD DOM she oozed style and class and attracted the attention of all the serious showmen. She sold for 3,100gns to TR Quick, Bridgwater, Somerset.
