GOLDEN TOPS THE SHANAEL GOLDEN CELEBRATION SALE

A crowd of more than a thousand people attended the RABDF Open Day at Greville Hall Farm near Evesham, Worcestershire to celebrate and view the winners of last year’s Gold Cup competition, the Miller family’s Shanael herd of Holsteins. The event culminated in a sale of more than fifty of the very best animals in the herd which returned an average of over £3,000 and saw cattle sold to all parts of the UK from Scotland to Cornwall as well as Northern Ireland.

Top price of the day was 9,000gs for the yearling heifer Shanael Sudan Golden ET. She is a daughter of the herd’s top cow Shanael Bolton Golden ET, currently yielding over 70kg daily in her 2nd lactation. Purchasers were the other well known herd owned by the Miller family, Randolph & Brian Miller’s Moorshard herd, Bridgwater, Somerset. They also made the top call of 6,000gs for Shanael Shamrock Eroy ET, a heifer with contract interest from Cogent, Genus and Eurogenes. Her full brother Shanael Shamrock Evolution ET was the top price of the dozen bulls to be sold, making 3,200gs to D.J & D.J.Heller, Truro, Cornwall for their Aclandfarm herd.

At 5,000gs Messrs Hale & Langley, Farnborough, Bath purchased Shanael Windbrook Asset ET, a yearling heifer out of Shanael Sanchez Asset ET (VG-87 2yr), who herself made 4,000gs to Peter Jones, Abergavenny for the Parcgwyn herd.

Alan & Rosemary Shufflebotham, the previous tenants of Greville Hall Farm retired from active farming several years ago but still retain great interest in the Holstein breed and invested in the very fancy Shanael Gold Chip Melody ET, a member of one of the herd’s best known families which produced the Royal Champion Shanael Gelpro Melody.

A strong contingent of Welsh breeders was present with a dozen animals bound for the principality. A beautiful sunny day and the prospect of rising milk prices helped to boost farmers’ confidence and a most interesting day was enjoyed by all those present
