TERRIFIC TRADE AT CRESKELD DISPERSAL

John and Carolyn Stoddart-Scott’s Creskeld herd, one of the oldest established herds of black & white cattle country was dispersed on the farm at Arthington, near Leeds on June 26th, and a large crowd witnessed a terrific trade, with an average of over £1,700 per head and 14 animals selling for 3,000 guineas or more and a further 42 for 2,000 gs or more. The sale followed John Stoddart-Scott’s decision to retire from farming and the retirement of long serving herd manager Trevor Woof, who has looked after the herd for over 40 years.

This was a unique catalogue in that every animal in the catalogue in the female line of the pedigree carried the Creskeld prefix, mainly emanating from cow families established in the 1920s. Top price was 4,000gs paid by local breeder David Ryder, Otley, who purchased the third calver Creskeld Ice Pack Judy (VG-88) for his Rypark herd. He also purchased the second calver Creskeld Allen Piper (VG-86), by Magor Bolivia Allen for 3,400gs.

At the same price Decrar Farming, Bielby, York bought the freshly calved Sicy Knowledge heifer Creskeld Knowledge Carol, and two VG-86 animals brought 3,300gs. D.J.Clarke Farming Ltd who are establishing their Apex herd on Messrs Leach’s old farm at Barnacre, near Preston, acquired Creskeld Allen Honeysuckle 3, and the much admired Creskeld Ross Piper 3 went to B.Danforth, Tadcaster, for his Richmark herd.

Served heifers made up to 2,950gs for a Ross Judy heifer, sold to C.Lupton & Sons, Selby and heifer calves were in tremendous demand, averaging over £900 and selling to 1,800gs, paid by Peter Sharp & Son, Oakworth, Keighley for a R-E-W Seaver daughter from the Honeysuckle family.

Biggest volume buyer was Brian Sercombe, who took 20 of the choicest animals for his Foresthill herd at Lutterworth, Leicestershire. Several buyers travelled from a distance with animals also sold to Ayrshire, Fife and Carmarthen as well as most northern counties.

It was sad to see such a good and old established herd go under the hammer, but a great tribute to nearly a century of breeding and a further demonstration of the demand for good quality cattle, particularly young cows and milking heifers.
